Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Flopsy is in stasis (still)

Buka

Warren Scout
Hi all,

Poor Flopsy has seen the vet today and he confirmed she is still in stasis, seems she has not recovered fully last time (she finished her medication 10 days ago or so).

I wonder why she is back in stasis, or why she is still in stasis

I feel so lost trying to balance her diet.

She has lost 200g  which is a lot because she only weighs 1.3kg

Her diet:
Excel Dual Care (per vet's advice) as it contains probiotics, etc - roughly 30g offered (she only eats about half of it in a day...)
Unlimited hay: grassy hay, oaty hay, chamomile hay, timothy hay
Unlimited water
Bramble leaves as per advice from the forum - she will eat about 5 in a day, a handful of parsley/cilantro/basil.
Occasional apple (1 slice) or banana (1 slice)

My goals are:
- to balance her diet so that she is a healthy and happy bunny
- to get her out of stasis
- to help her gain weight

Her spay surgery has once again been postponed  which means I can't bond her with my neutered boy
I feel she needs the help of another bunny to recover  But trying to bond her when she is weak wouldn't be a good idea I don't think.

She will also be on fibreplex long term (for a few months).
She has a review appointment for next week.
She has been given a weeks worth of medication - gut stimulant and pain killer.

What would you advise me in this situation?
I feel quite lost trying to find what works for her. I also feel she is depressed being alone

She is also very young - 6 months old. Is the above diet suitable for a young rabbit? Should she be getting more food to grow stronger? She has never been a fan of alfalfa hay, but I could mix some in her hay to help her gain weight.

Thanks all

Apart from the blood glucose test what other diagnostics has the Vet carried out ?

What are her exact symptoms ? How much hay does she actually eat ?

The blood test was all he did as far as I know. They checked her over, weighed her, checked her tummy sounds... To be honest, I am not sure because I was in the waiting area when she was in. This is a second vet that's seeing her...

I don't know how much hay exactly she is eating because she's got hay in so many places around the house it would be difficult to keep track. She is nibbling on it constantly when awake, BUT she's been sleeping so much recently (must be so weak)... I will syringe feed her for the next few days to make sure she is actually getting enough water as well...

Her poops look healthy in colour, and full of hay, but again they are small now and there is less of them (obviously she is eating less)...

:(

Thank you, I will. I don't think they specialise in rabbits. I will ask for a second opinion

I'm sorry your little one is poorly :(.
In your increasing fibre post a Reader of Books mentioned Coccidiosis - I think that's got to be worth exploring further. I really hope you can get some answers

I am so sorry she remains ill. Syringe feeding will help, yet is important that her vet rules out any secondary issue that would have caused her to not eat enough to keep her gut moving properly. Has the checked her teeth or looked for other secondary issues that may be causing her to not eat enough? Additional diagnostics may be required.
Does she have a sufficient dose of pain meds? You mention her poo is small and has hay. Is the poo hard or will a fresh poo crumble if you roll in between your fingers?

How much hay does she eat? If she lacks hay. you need to boost up veggies, pellets or critical care, Fibafirst. Do you have gut medicine or Malt paste?

Hi, I’m new to the forum but had to comment on your post because everything your bun has sounds so similar to my little Marigold who sadly passed on Wednesday.
I think you need to get a second opinion and get a full blood works done. My marigold also stopped eating as much - she refused her hay (and this girl was a champion hay eater) and was doing tiny little poops and few and far between. Immediately took her in to vets and they said similar to yours - that her gut sounded fine but they prescribed something to help her gut move and critical care. A few days later she still wasn’t eating much or pooping much and practically no water. She would eat greens though and some dried dandelion forage mix. Took her back to vet and they seemed annoyed almost with me, like I was overreacting. Said as she was still eating and pooping (even though barely) to keep at it. Said she was hydrated. I mentioned could it be her teeth (as at first she could eat pellets only that had been softened in water). They said it may be but they didn’t do dental and she got referred but they couldn’t see her til Monday. We spent the whole weekend worrying and giving her critical care and metacalm. By the time she got to her appointment she was very unwell, barely moving and like your little one, seemed sleepy all the time.
The new vet kept her in and put her on a drip right away. Her initial blood test showed she may have an infection so she went on antibiotics and when she was a little brighter on Wed morning they did an X-ray and more blood works. They believed she had a respiratory infection and it wasn’t related to her teeth.
Anyway the sad news came that evening - little Marigold went into cardiac arrest and passed away. I’m absolutely gutted as she was only a year old. She was a rescue bun and we had her only 4 weeks and we were going to bond her with our other bun Jean-Luc. We loved the little girl. I honestly thought on Wed afternoon that she was going to be ok.
Please get her checked over again as I don’t want what happened to marigold to happen to your little bun - I’m not saying this to scare you but it resonated so much I had to comment. Please keep us updated x

So sorry for your loss of Marigold

Thank you so much. It’s been a horribly sad few days, keep going into the bunny room (now back to just Jean-Lucs room) and wishing she was there. We said goodbye to her at the vet on Thursday, she looked like she was sleeping and was so soft. My poor timid little girl.
We get her ashes soon and I have ordered a little bunny shaped urn so she can stay safe in the bunny room where she should have lived a long and happy life x

I am so sorry for your loss of Marigold. Having a good vet is essential, though even that may not be enough in some cases.
Hugs

Such a tragic event  I am sure that Marigold knew that she was loved in the short time she was with you x

Thank you all for your replies. Flopsy os going to see a rabbit specialist today.

She’s still eating less and I’m syringe feeding her at times. She’s still pooping.

I’ve been feeling so down with her being unwell. I’ll update once I get some answers x

Good luck with seeing the specialist with Flopsy today. I hope they are helpful and provide some proposals to get to the bottom of her issues. Yes, please do update.

Thanks all. Flopsy has been admitted overnight to the small animals hospital

She’s very constipated. She’s going to get a scan. I will know more tomorrow x
