  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Physiological serum

The vet told me I could apply physiological serum to the inside of the nose and eyes of rabbits. Is this true? If I put liquid serum into the rabbit's nose, will fluid accumulate in his lungs?

That's saline, so safe for eyes and nose for humans.. Idk about rabbits..? (eyes will be fine ofc, I just don't know about the nose [emoji38])

Side note, we love mustela baby products for Evelyn [emoji38]

My vet said it is safe in rabbits. Does evelyn like this?

Thank you so much:)

What if I clean the solution by squeezing the solution inside the rabbit's nose? If I do this, is there any danger of fluid getting into his lungs?

Depends how much you use. Rabbits are obligate nose breathers and having anything put up their nose will cause them a lot of stress. I would not do it as there is a better alternative ie a nebuliser.

Thank you very much for your help. You are our bunny mom :)

I woud never consider putting something up a rabbit's nose by hand - it's difficult enough to get them to take oral medication, plus the danger of inhaling the solution into the lungs, hence risking inhalation pneumonia. I'm sure you don't want to risk that.

Nebulising saline is much more effective and far less stressful all round. A nebuliser is designed to make the saline into much smaller particles than would normally be possible, so just breathing in the nebulised saline means that it will reach all areas of the nasal passages.

Your opinion is very useful for me, thank you very much :)
