  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bunny with heart disease

Hi everyone, my old small rabbit Pippin has heart disease, she was diagnosed awhile ago after she would have fits of laboured fast breathing, sneezing excessively, hiccuping etc etc. Before we brought her to the vet we got an emergency appointment because she had two breathing fits in a day and she was put on frusol. She seems a lot better since being on it but she has had one breathing fit since being on it about a week and a half ago and she’s been on meds about a month. Otherwise she seems really happy and content! I’m worried because tonight she’s had another one, she was binkying around in high spirits and knocked herself in to another breathing fit. This time it seemed kind of worse though, her whole body went limp she kind of bent her neck and her eye was bulging out the socket. It only lasts a few minutes and she’s back to normal, I always panic and want to ring a vet and then she’s fine again and remains fine until the next one. So weird, does the fact she’s having them mean the frusol isn’t working? Does anyone have similar experience to this and what happened?

Depending on the exact type of heart disease it could be that additional medication is needing to support cardiac function. Also, the dose of Frusol might need adjusting. You need to contact your Vet again. An example of additional drugs that might be necessary are Benazepril ( Benazecare ) and Pimobendan ( Vetmedin ).
