Snoopy has an ear infection/ really bad update :(

Thank you. From past experience, I've found that it usually takes a few days to get an appointment through. I'm really hoping the Covid situation doesn't make it longer. I've actually got a week off work from tomorrow so it would be great timing if I can get an appointment this week. It was supposed to give me a bit of time to rest and relax because I've been working flat out with the overtime. I think that plan has gone out of the window now!

Oh dear. Still prob better to just be able to focus on getting Snoops 100% than juggling too much work. I hope you still get some R&R. Hope you get that appointment soon too

Aw, yeah, resting and relaxing isn't very easy with an unwell bunny! But I hope you can get an appointment this week, then, since you'll be off work, and that you can still get some rest and a chance to relax.

Thinking of you and sending more vibes to Snoopy. I hope you get a speedy appointment and ideally this week.

Thanks all.

Snoopy is doing ok. He's not happy with me at the moment as he really hates being handled and being made to take his medication. He's taking the baytril suprisingly well though. I mean, he is making a fuss and destroying the syringes but that's par for the course with him! I'm just glad I kept a stock of all the spares they've given me in the past!

Well done on taking your meds Snoopy, hope they make you better soon xxx

Good thinking keeping extra syringes. It is also good you know his meds are getting in him rather than on him. My bunnies take Medicam well as long as I do not use same syringe used for bayril. Sending vibes he continues to do ok and improves. I hope your vet will be prompt sending referral too.

Hi all

I have an update on Snoopy. The referral appointment has finally come through. He's going to see the specialists this Thursday morning. It looks like I won't be allowed into the consultation itself so I need to make sure I remember to give them some notes.

I'm very relieved we finally have this appointment as other issues have sprung up. Snoopy's hay consumption has really gone down. I'm assuming it's due to the fact his ear issues are making hay eating uncomfortable for him. Consequently his waste poos are not good and he's been having messy bottom issues.

He's clearly not getting enough fibre and my main concern at the moment is preventing him from going into stasis. I've been feeding him 20mls of recovery food three times a day in order to try and get more fibre into him, keep his gut moving, as well as to try and stabilise his weight.

I've also got some short stranded hay (Nature's Own Sweet Green) and so far he seems to be managing better with that. I also asked my local vet to prescribe some cisapride in addition to the metacam to help with his gut motility.

His poos are looking better, although still not fantastic. He is able to eat herbs and forage without issue. I've been letting him have as much of that as he wants. Not ideal but I think the priority here is keeping his gut moving.

Unfortunately I think it's pretty certain now that he will have dental issues that will also need to be addressed. But we just have to deal with one issue at a time.

Bit ironic that I've been obsessing over Snoopy getting stasis but Fudgie was the one who ended up getting it!

Poor boy - I'm sorry there are more symptoms. what other hay do you have in scraps ? i'm wondering if he might like haybox soft - I'm happy to send a sample. Great news you have an appointment Thursday

Thanks J&B. I forgot to mention that he recently went through quite a heavy moult, which really hasn't helped matters.

They also have ings hay (which is quite soft), a stalky timothy and the abrasive orchard grass. He's only really been picking at those. This evening he ate a decent amount of the sweet green I recently bought, which was encouraging. Fingers crossed this is the one that will tide him over.

Thanks very much for your very kind offer. Hopefully we should be ok on the hay front now but I'll let you know if we do need to try the haybox.

Glad you've got the appointment come through, and that Snoopy is managing to eat some hay. Sending lots more vibes for your boy xx

Sending lots of vibes for him. I hope the appointment goes well. When I had bunnies fibafirst used to go down well here, and also Readigrass, they were both good sources of fibre during dental issue times. My bunnies always liked the sweet green hay too

Sending lots more vibes for Snoopy. It sounds as though you're doing a good job keeping his fibre intake up. I hope the appointment goes well for him as well.

Sending lots more vibes for Snoopy. I'm glad you have that appointment with the specialist soon. Poor Snoopy, having a difficult time eating hay now... It sounds like you're doing everything you can to keep his guts moving, and it's good that he's eating more of the sweet green hay. Hopefully he'll be okay until Thursday and the specialist can help him feel better soon.

Thanks so much everyone xx

Zoobec, I have offered him readigrass as well but he's turning his nose up to that, unfortunately as I think it would help with his weight. Thanks for reminding me about the Fibafirst sticks, I'd forgotten all about them. In the past, neither bun has been particularly fussed about them but I think they're worth a shot.

I'm still quite concerned about his weight as, despite my best efforts, he still feels fairly skinny to me. I'm hoping that if we can get on top of his ear infection and possible dental issues his hay consumption will go up and he will slowly start to regain the weight he's lost.

I do have some positive news, however. Overnight he left me a nice big pile of poos and we have an increase in size. Probably the best they've looked in a while. Thank you sweet green hay!

Yay, that's great that he had a nice big pile of poops! Well done, Snoopy. I'm sorry he's still struggling with his weight, though, and is feeling skinny. Hopefully once he's able to comfortably eat more hay again he'll gain some weight.

Thanks J&B.

We've just got back. It was quite a difficult consultation. They took him inside, but I had to wait outside in the carpark and speak to the vet on the phone. Not easy with the wind and traffic!

So they examined his ear and couldn't see obvious signs of pus or inflammation but he does still have that slight head tilt. The baytril might actually have helped. Amazingly he didn't have any tooth spurs. But that was only what they could see. There may still be issues at the back.

They suspect that the infection is deeper in the ear. This is where I feel a bit paralysed by indecision. One option was to do a CT scan to see what's going on and to try and do a swab of his ear further down if they can find any pus.

Depending on what they find, an option further down the line is surgery. The problem I have is that Snoopy is 9 and I'm questioning whether surgery would be in his best interests. I got the impression the vet was of the same opinion. She did say that some rabbits ca be kept comfortable for a while on long term antibiotics and pain relief.

Getting to the scan itself will be an issue as I would have to get to Potters Bar directly, which will be a difficult journey and very stressful for Snoopy. My local animal hospital does have a CT scanner, so another option would be to get them to do it and send it over to the RVC for analysis. I'd have to check with them whether it's possible.

Finally, I'm not even sure whether to go ahead with a CT scan at all. For me the only real viable option would be a long course of antibiotics and I don't think having a scan would significantly alter the treatment option.

I really need to try and get hold of the specialist again and discuss it further. Ultimately I need to do what's best for Snoopy.
