Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore neck fold

Hi all,

My 11.5yr old house rabbit Illy has what appears to be a small bald patch and redness in her right neck fold. I only spotted it when I lifted some apple up for her to reach to check her mobility.

Could it be sweat from the heat that's causing this? She does have runny eyes which I try to keep on top of and she does drool when stressed. She visited the vets on Sunday so I wonder if it was a combination of stress, heat and drool.

We're booked in to see the vet in a week to get it looked at, but in the meantime I'm continuing her on her usual pain relief and other meds. Does anyone have suggestions on what may have caused it and what I can do in the meantime to soothe it? I'm happy to try creams etc but have no idea where to start.

Rabbits do not sweat so it won’t be that. If she is drooling then it could be caused by saliva. Without being able to see the area it is hard to advise you what to do til you see a Vet. Certainly trimming the fur away from around the sore skin would help. Can you post a photo of the area that is sore ?

My bun Mischief always drools when he goes to the vets. He did have a sore neck fold receņtly as he had an operation to remove a lump from his neck. They shaved the fur for the op and it caused a sore neck fold where he was spitting out water when we syringed him.

As Inspector Morse said it is best to check with a vet. However if it helps in the meantime we used a little Sudocrem on the area (on advice from the vet) and it cleared up in 2 days. It is good stuff. But only a little as they may digest it otherwise whilst cleaning themselves. Please note I am not a vet though. Hope it clears up soon.

Thank you both so much for your thoughts and advice! I did try to get a photo, but it was nigh on impossible to get a non-blurry one

The good news is that it seems to have been caused by drool and it has now cleared up :D I'm going to make sure to dry off under her chin after future vet visits to ensure it doesn't happen again.
