How many times do you take your rabbits to the vet a year?

Hi everyone, yesterday we (my partner and I) had to take Olive to the vet as she wasn't eating and just wasn't herself. It's horrible having to leave her there overnight all on her own. Anyway, on the way back we said to each other that it seems we are there every couple of months! Both of us have always had various different pets throughout our lives and have never had as many vet trips as we have with our two rabbits. It made us wonder is this normal or have our buns just been particularly unlucky healthwise?

Counting it up since April last year, Olive had a couple of trips to a vet to examine a swelling followed by another appointment to have surgery to remove it. Evan has had two separate health things that needed overnight stays. Olive's current stay makes it the sixth or seventh visit in a year that needed at least an overnight stay (I can't remember the exact number because everything this year has blurred into one another!).

How many times do you need to go to the vet for non-routine things (ie. not vaccinations/check-ups)?

Thanks for reading this!

I have a variety of pets (cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, smaller caged furries) - but rabbits do seem to be the most fequent vet visitors. Some years, I have had a rabbit there every 2 weeks. I usually have 3 rabbits, so it's not like it's many different rabbits going all the time. I very rarely ever need to take a guinea pig, especially as they don't need vaccinating.

I'm sorry your bunnies have been at the vets recently. It depends for us, we've had a good couple of years with maybe 1 or 2 extra vet trips not for vaccinations but since December we've been there every couple of weeks. We have 3 rabbits, 2 had respiratory infections, one developed a lung problem and needed specialist care and injections every couple of days, sadly she's passed away now. My third rabbit is currently a regular having treatment for an eye infection/blocked tear duct so we're their very often atm. Usually we only have a one off problem or a gut stasis visit perhaps once a year.

I agree my bunnies are the most regular at vets, apart from my 14 year old dog who goes monthly for his medications. My guinea pig is 5 and having her first visit for a lump removal atm

Thanks for your replies Shimmer and Liz47. I don't feel so bad now! I suppose rabbits are just that bit more sensitive than other animals. Poor things.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss Liz47. I hope you are doing ok. Best wishes to your pets undergoing treatment at the moment.

Only when needed. (sometimes that is a lot!). If I'm lucky that means every 6 months for spurs witl little fella and we will se how it will be with little bigger fella. He was almost vet free for couple of years. In the february and marc almost every week. Hey it has been 2 weeks that I did not go to the vet (ohh let it last!).

I would say every couple of months unfortunately, we had a dental bun that needed that and then since loosing her last year we've had what feels like a run of bad luck with stasis etc.

I think mid Jan to now is the longest stretch we've had without a vet trip in a couple of years to be honest. And touch wood we can keep that going until August when next vaccinations are due but I suspect Rodney may need a dental before then as he seems to need those every six months.

Last year was a lot of times because of Winnie’s eye issue. The previous year was much better.

It really depends here... Casper didn't go to the vet at all last year except for vaccinations/health check, but this year he's already been there 6 times. Sophie went to the vet a couple of times last year for tests because she was losing weight, and twice because she wasn't eating. This year so far she's had tests as well. I think bunnies are definitely more sensitive and prone to health issues compared to other animals. I know Casper and Sophie go to the vet way more often than our family's cats and dog have needed vet care.

Very, very infrequently and I consider myself incredibly lucky. Before Chibbs' hypothermia incident in February this year, last vet visit was Aboleth's demise November 2019, and prior to that Lopsy's massive grass seed in eye incident in, erm, I want to say early 2016?
