Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi all,

We were battling Lola and her mucky bum at lunch time, and I nicked her with the scissors.

I think it was superficial, as she didn’t seem to flinch when I did it, so didn’t realise till I saw the blood.

I’ve been in touch with the vets to see if I can book at appointment (she keeps getting mucky bums) but is there anything I can do to help clean it clean and avoid infection?

At the moment aside from foot stamping she seems OK, and is stuffing her face with hay.

I’ve not had a chance to look yet, she’s a bit of a handful so it’s much easier if one person holders her and the other looks. I’ll try later but might need to wait till my wife gets back from work.

I take it the best thing for wound care is to keep it clean with cotton wool and clean boiled water, whilst trying to avoid removing any scabs?

At the moment Lola seems OK in her self, eating, drinking and running around like a loon.

The next available appointment isn’t until Friday.

if the wound is now closed, clean and dry I’d leave it alone. Try to check it if you can as if there are signs of infection she will need to see a Vet before Friday. Any wound and having a mucky bum are also red flags for Fly Strike risk, so be mindful of that.

Thanks, I’ll make sure to check.

I assume signs of infection are just normal stuff, weeping/discharge and red inflamed skin that is warm/hot to the touch?

Managed to check Lola, the cut doesn’t look too bad.

There was a small bit where some of the scab had come away, but it was a very small area.

The skin around the area looked ok, not noticeably redder that the rest of her skin, nor did it appear to be swollen, and it wasn’t tender as she didn’t flinch or anything whilst I was checking it.

I also couldn’t see any evidence of discharge, either fresh or dried into her fur etc.

We are going to keep checking her to keep an eye on it, and then see what the vet says on Friday.

Sounds as though the cut is healing well . Good luck at the Vets on Friday :)

We are back from the vets now, he said the cut is fine, they couldn’t find it at first so had to bring her out so I could show them.

It didn’t need any cleaning, stitches or anything like that.
