Is a Rabbit a Good Fit?

Its funny how we all paint such a bleak picture of owning rabbits yet can't live without them [emoji38]

Loads of good points raised though. A couple of bunnies would be lucky to have you. I'm only really familiar with rabbits (had other childhood pets) . I guess the biggest problem is its hard to know what your getting in terms of health, destructive abilities & willingness to bond with you. I love them all (though very grateful 2 of my three like affection from me & none chew much they shouldn't)
I know! I honestly love them to death, and am totally devoted to them, their health and happiness. It is a huge honour to be able to watch them sharing my home, knowing they are happy. They are hilarious, adorable, sensitive and profoundly idiosyncratic creatures. Not to mention utterly, utterly beautiful. There. I'm not bunny hater, really! I just don't think they're the best for anyone with anxiety issues

:( Boo . I had you down as a bunnies forever kinda person. Still in the same post you talk about getting more ;)
Stockholm Bunny Syndrome?

Yeah, I could live without them, even my relatively-stress-free ones  But I want to give them a great chance of a great life and we're able to do that :) I was right about Chibbs though, she wouldn't make a great indoor bunny because she has chewing sessions: just found another few inches stripped off the underside of the hutch tray

Oh I get you! They are pretty damn good at inducing anxiety issues if you didn't have them in the first place. On the flip side I don't know where I'd be without my bunnies (& when Joey, Boo & Mouse get to 20 years old & have had enough I will get more) & i think my mental health would be a lot worse without them

Realise this is about Graciee, but thought I’d contribute.

I sometimes think I’m a bunnies forever lady, and then I don’t. I do love my 2 so much, and miss them when I’m out. I’ve just found that of the 3 bunnies we’ve ever had, 2 have had really tricky health issues. As I have bipolar and stress a lot, I find bunnies dont help with my anxiety:love:

I might be Idk, it's the stress they cause me I don't like.. But it's just because I care about them so much [emoji38] and I'm a perfectionist which makes it worse.

Plus they're a lot of work [emoji51] again if I lowered my standards it'd be less work but I struggle with that... Basically the take away here is I'm a nightmare [emoji38][emoji38]

If there was a bun that needed a home though I'd take it in a heartbeat [emoji38] I'm just a disaster [emoji38]

Idk if kids and prey animals work longterm either, Evelyn's really sweet tbh, but she plays rough [emoji38] she patted Apricot on the head the other day really hard [emoji51] Apricot didn't seem to mind, she flattened for strokes but I kept thinking Clementine wouldn have got so upset if that happened to her [emoji51][emoji38]

I can relate to all of this. Minus the Evelyn bit because I don’t have a child!:D

Evelyn sounds like she’ll be great with rabbits eventually!

I think she will tbh, and the buns have all been very sweet with her tbh, they're all curious and come say hello, so no problems so far I just worry about her hurting them maybe. I'm keen for her to be gentle with all animals and plants etc so hopefully it'll be okay, although she did accidentally break a large leaf off my calathea the other day [emoji38]

I have anxiety and find that having pets to look after helps my mental health.

I have 2 dogs, 2 hamsters, 3 mice, 4 guinea pigs and 6 rabbits.

They have hardly had any health issues and I get so so much joy from watching them.

The cleaning and care can feel overwhelming during really down times but their sweetness and the fact that they depend on me helps to give me purpose.

I think if mine didn't have health issues it'd be fine tbh!

Everyone has made really good points about the pros and (many!) cons of having bunnies. I'm going to add a few points to the pros half of the balance sheet.

Being herbivores, they don't eat smelly food! It's all lovely smelling hay, grass, plants, veg and herbs. So no gagging like you do when opening a tin of dog or cat food. This also means that they're perfect for vegans and vegetarians.

I feel I've experienced a lot of personal growth from having bunnies. From a practical point of view I've really gotten into foraging which means I've become much more knowledgeable about wild plants. As a born and bred city girl that's not something I ever thought I'd say.

I've also learned that I'm a lot better in a crisis than I though I was. When my buns show signs of being unwell I morph into a four star general planning a blitz on Stalingrad. That means straight to the vet with no messing around, get referrals to specialist if I need to and all meds and syringe feeds delivered on the dot. Once the crisis is over I revert back to my usual fannying about, procrastinating self.
