  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How do you make the decision to put to sleep

She was treated for gut stasis and has come home but there’s really not much improvement. Sometimes she eats, sometimes she doesn’t and she’s still mostly just sitting in her house in the shed. The vet said with her heart condition she won’t be in pain but I’m still not convinced she’s got a very good quality of life. She’s eating small amounts, but she really only ever reaches ok, she never seems to be good anymore. I need to have a think, it’s so difficult.

I'm sorry she is still worrying you. Its such a difficult thing to assess their quality of life. I have an old & arthritic bun, she doesn't act much like a bunny (her movement is really limited) but she still smiles & looks content the majority of the time. Does she look content even if she is more sedate than you'd expect a rabbit to be?

I'm sorry Jelly is poorly. She sounds like Bigwig at times who is on medication for a lung mass, she has good and bad days. She's in a bad spell at the moment but we're carrying on going as the specialist advised it takes time.

For me I take into account whether the good days outweigh the bad. For a Rabbit they live in the moment, how they felt yesterday does not matter to them, neither does how they may feel tomorrow. Can the Rabbits come indoors ? I think you may get a better overall picture of how she is coping if she was a House Rabbit.

With Tessie (rip) she stopped moving and had not cleaned herself underneath. She just seemed so frail and not with it any more.

It is such a hard decision. Best of luck.
