Jasmine's gunky eye UD Final update 12/10

Liz47

Wise Old Thumper
Jasmine has been on isathal and baytril for a week now although we are nearly out of baytril. Her eye has improved, but does still sometimes have a bit of white discharge in the corner although this looks much better then it did. I have ordered an eye cleaner as her stained fur is making it difficult to assess if there's more she's wiping away herself onto her fur, although I do think what's there now is just old staining. We have been cleaning with boiled (cooled) water and hibiscrub on the fur. Has anyone got any experience of this? Not sure whether to continue with current meds for longer or see about trying something new?

I really wouldn't use hibiscrub for cleaning her fur, especially if it is anywhere near her face or on paws that she will wipe her face with.

I'm using Hibiscrub from the vets at a really pale dilution, we use it pretty much daily on various animals at work even on the face. I have some specific eye cleaner on order kindly recommended by another member, the hibi was just to clean the thick crusted fur. To wipe her actual eye we were using just boiled water but haven't needed to clean it for a few days now :)

Her eye doesn't look good at all. Did the Vet look into her eye in case she had something under her eyelid? This happened to me once and the Vet found apiece of hay under the there. I hope her eye gets better soon.

Thanks both. She had Fluorescein dye to check the eye which was fine, and nothing apparently in her eyelid. Originally the duct looked to have white discharge in which since the first couple of days has been clear as I worried about a blocked duct. The vet suspects it's a bacterial infection as she was also snotty and our other rabbit is having treatment for Pasteurella (although is housed separate and we don't wear the same clothes/share equipment, they are still in the same household).

Just taken these pics now, she can fully open her eye but I was giving nose rubs to get her to sit still and she was closing both eyes.

Her other eye has a small area now of crust, but is dark rather than white/yellow discharge :?

Will be taking her back to the vets early next week but unsure what to ask for next.

Can you get her to vet sooner? Her first picture shows snotty nose. Has that improved? If so perhaps give abx more time. Otherwise vet may want to culture bacteria to select appropriate one.
Did your pasturella bunny improve with same abx?
Sending vibes.

She is beautiful:love: I don’t have any experience of this so I can’t advise but I’m sending vibes xx

Thank you both :) Vets are fully booked and as she's eating and otherwise well can't move her appointment forward from Tuesday. Her snotty nose has improved. My other Pasteurella bunny is tricky, it isn't affecting her upper resp its all lower causing a lung abscess. She's on baytril, frusol, metacam and penicillin injections and is under the care of am exotic specialist. Her culture showed a strain of pasteurella sensitive to baytril so if we assume it's the same.

Since baytrail is helping, I would give it more time before considering a change. Glad other bunny had culture and has excellent care. Sending more vibes.

Susan (another REW) has something similar to this from time to time. She has to have her tear duct flushed. When we first got her she had had an op on her eye and my vet seems to think that the tear duct is narrowed. The tear duct is flushed and comes out of her nose. That clears all the white grittiness from around her eye and wet whiteness round her nose. Then I wash her eye with the cooled boiled water as you do but smear with vaseline as the white gritty stuff is salt from her tears. She has to have this about twice a year. I have photos of the vet flushing but they look awful. Susan doesnt bother though.

Thanks all :) I would be happy for her to have her tear ducts flushed, I read this can be done conscious with a local anaesthetic applied to the eye. She hasn't had her teeth checked via X ray yet, my vet was keen to go for infection as the first cause due to Bigwig.

A better picture of her eye this morning, I've not cleaned it for a few days and looks like there's some new yellow staining on her fur. Her eyes are blue, the redness in the corner is new within the past couple of days and there is some white discharge in the corner. Will call the vets tomorrow see if I can change her appointment to allow for a potential tear duct flush and/or X rays

Update on Jasmine, her eye has been looking better but still not 100% and her 3rd eye lid is still showing. Vet advised to continue baytril for 3 weeks and isathal drops. If she is still having problems then they'll do a swab of the discharge, or I can opt for a dental including X rays. Her ducts don't appear blocked.

Glad to read the update on Jasmines eye improvement. So glad her ducts are not blocked.
