Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Jasmine's gunky eye UD Final update 12/10

Thank you all. She's had dye in her eye twice and no ulcer/damage. We're self isolating for a hospital admission for myself on Thursday so wouldn't be able to get her seen sooner unless some one else took her for us but the vet who is in isn't very knowledgeable, which is why we have to wait until Friday (then I got a call about my procedure too). She is on metacam already for very mild arthritis.

She's not insured, we'd happily take her to a specialist if we could get there. We don't drive and Jasmine is a very stressy rabbit, when we used to be able to travel by car 15 mins to a previous vet they'd always send us home with stasis meds as often she would go into stasis after a simple visit. Not sure what to do for the best, Fridays appt is a proper look under GA, flush tear duct, dental X ray and possible dental.

ETA: the eye cleaner is bought online but is advertised for rabbits and recommended on here, also we have a few clients at work that use it. I've seen a few bunnies come through work who's eye/s look similar, and are diagnosed with 'chronic dacryocystitis' where the symptoms are just managed. The vet thinks Jasmine's eye is secondary to her Pasteurella, so thinks it may not necessarily get much better and needs lifelong management. But due to how red the eye can look at times is what's worrying me so wonder if more can be done rather than just manage the symptoms. The vet on Friday is more knowledgeable.

I’ve just seen this thread, but sending vibes to you and Jasmine.

We have had problems with our rabbit’s eyes for a year, and finally got her to an ophthalmologist recently, and she was diagnosed with eosinophilic keratitis. It’s a chronic eye problem, that doesn’t seem to be commonly found in rabbits. We’re still trying to manage it.

I’d really recommend going to an eye specialist. X

Thank you all, I called to see which ophthalmologist my regular vets usually refer to and it's one near Leeds. It is doable but is 3 trains and a bus, not sure how Jasmine would cope. I couldn't get a lift there but could probably get a lift again to the RWAF Gold and exotic referral vet we saw with Bigwig, although he's not specifically an eye vet.

Why not ring that vet and ask what would be best? Might save you a wasted journey to them if they feel they can't help and you really need to see a specialist - and I'd expect a Gold vet to recognise what they could and couldn't do.
I hope you get answers soon, its not easy having these worries is it!!

The RWAF gold practice are happy to see her as I mentioned we were having problems with her when I was last there with Bigwig, the eye specialist referral have offered an appt but the earliest they can see her is 27th May!! I'll see how she gets on on Friday.

Could your bunny have developed an allergy to eye wash? I used a drop for years when I suffered from bloodshot, irritated painful eyes so I initially did not realize I developed an allergy.

My late bunny ,Buddy, had prolapsed 3rd eyelid, my regular vet and eye specialist both prescribed anti-inflammatory/analgesic eye drop-I no longer know name of med.. His 3rd eyelid was improved, yet it remained prolapsed.
Buddy also got artificial tears a couple times each day. Artificial tears come in individual use versions without preservatives.

Thank you. Her eye looks better when we use the eye wash as opposed to just water or salt water so I don't think it's the eye wash, but we could try just use water till Friday. Sometimes we don't need to use anything, only when she has discharge to wipe away. I would like to change eye drops as I've seen others have had more success with Maxitrol, but vets have used Isathal first since it's licensed for rabbits and won't change until a swab on Friday. She's on systemic anti-inflammatory and antibiotic.

Thank you for the vibes for myself, I'm really hoping I'll be allowed home so I can get their packed lunches/send them off for their vet trips the following day (as Ellie pig is also in for a lump removal) but I'll most likely need a couple of nights stay :(
Photo of her poor looking eye, the redness of the third eyelid is what I'm most worried about.

Thank you both xx

Thank you, I'm sure there's more going on than 'just Pasteurella', although I guess this could have caused the abscess. Do you have any experience of this sort of abscess? I'm going to ask for a skull X ray, dental if needed, swab & tear duct flush if that's the best diagnostics at this stage.

Sending lots of vibes for your procedure. , your pig's surgery and your bunny's eye.
If bunny already sedated it may be wise to do a couple additional tests done at the same time.

Thank you both xx

IME abscesses in the nasolacrimal duct have been due to tooth root elongation. The skull radiographs will be very useful to see what is going on. Yes, Pasteurella is certainly often involved with abscesses.

Hope your procedure goes well today. More vibes being sent xx
