  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit noisy breathing

BlueIvey

New Kit
I syringe fed my rabbit half an hour ago and she is now noisy breathing sounds like snoring. Has she aspirated? Help!

I would ring your out of hours emergency vets for advice as a matter of urgency.

Mine snores. I think if he would aspirated it would have shown immediatly. COuld also be sign of some other problem that has occured.

I'm afraid she died before we could get her there this morning. We have no transport and the emergency vet is 10 miles away. We had just returned from the vets as she was not eating and the vet advised to investigate further back in her mouth/throat under anaesthetic as her teeth seemed fine but she was dribbling. She advised syringe feeding and I have syringe fed rabbits many times but I'm so worried that I killed her with kindness!

Thank you for your condolences. Can I ask how likely was it my fault? She showed no aspiration reaction when I was feeding her but it came on shortly after?

Sorry for your loss. Rabbits are obligate nasal breathers, so normally difficult for them to aspirate. You mentioned anaesthetic and she was seriously ill, both factors that most likely resulted in/contributed to her death. It is common for bunnies to mouth breath before the die.
