  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Advice please - bunny is limping - update

It is always a shock how quickly a bill can add up. I hope Basil's foot improves over the few weeks

I hope he gets better soon, and completely understand how quickly vet bills can add up. We didn’t have our first bunny insured, and he cost us £2500 in the initial 6 months of having him. So you’re not alone there.

Now he’s got the X-ray he’ll hopefully get the right treatment.

Thanks so much for all the advice and good wishes. Basil is cheerful this morning. He spent the night in the rabbit carrier as the vet told us to keep him indoors and confined. Mainly he just wants to lie in his litter tray, but if we give him free run of the living room every so often he starts running about and we have to jump up and stop him. We’ve been mixing his metacam up with mashed banana which he absolutely loves so that is great as before we were grappling with him which can’t have done his leg any good.

Keeping him confined for a few weeks is a shame when the weather’s so nice and he wants to be with his sister (we are still keeping them together, but obviously it’s not fair to keep Bonnie confined so we’re letting her out to run about) but hopefully a few weeks of rest and metacam will do the trick.

Good that he is taking his metacam now, but please don't give him a free run at all - every time he gets out and runs he will be shifting that fracture and stopping it from healing. This is a case where it is definitely kinder to be cruel, keep him properly restricted for long enough the first time and you have the best chance of it healing properly and him getting out sooner.
You might want to look at getting a cheap dog crate instead of a carrier if it is a plastic one, that way he can see out everywhere, his friend can lie alongside and groom, and you can use the crate to add a bit of enrichment by putting diffrent foods at different heights or hanging them - just watch as you don't want him moving about too much, or standing on his back legs - but it gives you a bit more flexibility than a carrier does. Crates are usually fairly cheap on fb marketplace, just make sure it is small enough to restrict him enough, but if it is a bit bigger you could put a box in for him. You can just cover the whole crate with a layer of hay and top this up multiple times, with old towels underneath to absorb the wet.

Sorry, by free run of the living room I mean not in a cage/carrier. We watch him like a hawk and if he starts moving about we put him back in his litter tray. When the weather is warm enough he’ll be outside in the hutch with the stairs and run blocked off.

Yes, it’s horrible confining him to small spaces, especially on a sunny spring day, but I know we have to do it to give his leg the best possible chance of healing.
