Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Optivet- Eye update Dec 21

Thank you all, unfortunately her eyes got worse, so she’s back on optimmune. I really feel for her, as nothing seems to be working.

She gave zigzag, her partner a good old hump though which was pleasant to see!

Oh, poor Winnie. I'm sorry her eyes have gotten worse again and that nothing seems to be working. :( I hope the Optimmune will be helpful. Sending lots of vibes for her. It's good that she still feels up to giving Zigzag a good hump!

Thanks for your well wishes both. She has some scaring on her eyes, but can mostly see. She’s quite hunched right now, which does make me worry.
We’ll send more photos to the ophthalmologist on Monday. We’ll def need another med to treat whatever’s going on.

Hello all,

I hope you’re well,

I don’t post on here as often as I used to, but thought I’d provide a quick update. Winnie still suffers from very bad bouts and flare ups of eosinophilic keratitis. They tend to coincide with her moults. She’s needed to take prednisolone when her eye gets particularly bad. It’s a nightmare to manage, and obviously difficult for Winnie.

She’s being treated by the head vet at Optivet, but he has admitted that they’re unable to get to the root of the problem, and is considering referring to another ophthalmologist. Does anyone know of a specialist exotic ophthalmologist?

Thanks in advance

So sorry that Winnie is still having lots of eye problems. I am sure the Vet you currently consult will know of some fellow Professionals who might be able to add their expertise to try to establish the root cause of the problem. If it is autoimmune then ongoing systemic drugs might be needed I suppose, as well as topical treatment.

Sending lots of vibes for Winnie x

Thank you for letting us know how Winnie is doing. I'm so sorry she's still having so much trouble with her eye. Poor girl. :( I hope that a different ophthalmologist has some new ideas on how to help her, if you get a referral. Sending Winnie lots and lots of vibes.

Thank you, have you had a rabbit who has been on ongoing systemic drugs?

Thank you all for your well wishes. We’re seeing an ophthalmologist called David Williams next week. He has a lot of experience of eosinophilic keratitis and likes rabbits too!

Not for the condition Winnie has, but yes for many other conditions. I hope DW will have some more treatment options to try x
