Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Optivet- Eye update Dec 21

Sorry to make this a London centric thread, but does anyone go to Twickenham vets? We’re thinking of seeing Christabel (having heard good things), for quite a severe eye infection that one of my bunnies has been suffering from. It’s been ongoing for nearly a year, and she’s being treated by CJ Hall. I am aware they’re an exotic specialist, but I feel like they’ve run out of ideas.

I’m pretty sure JJ uses them, and a few others on here. Hopefully they will see this and reply

I use TVS who refer complex Exotics cases to The Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital in Camden

https://www.rvc.ac.uk/small-animal-vet/general-practice

TVS are very Rabbit Savvy but none of the Vets are Exotics Specialists. All TVS Vets know their limits and will not hesitate to make a Specialist Referral to The Beaumont if a particular Exotics case exceeds their degree of knowledge.

Thanks both

I think I’m likely to give Twickenham Vets a go, even though they’re not exotic specialists, as they sound very good. My bun really needs a second opinion too, as I’m pretty sure Matthew at CJ Hall has never seen an infection like her’s.

Good luck :)

I use Twickenham too. That's where Bing had his leg amputation. Fantastic job by Christabel. The scar healed so fast and Bing was very relieved after his operation.

Mr Bennett had complex cancer and they referred to Camden.

Best of luck with the eye infection. X

Thanks all. I’ve booked an appointment with Christabel. Does make me wonder whether the Beaumont is better than CJ Hall.

My bunnies have been to the Beaumont a few times and they've seen all four exotics vets, which included Joanna and Nadine. The other two were Jack and Vicky. They were all really good so your bunny will be in very good hands whichever one they see on the day if you do get referred.

Thanks all, great to hear they’re all good. I went to Nadine’s talk last year on looking after rabbits. She seemed so passionate about rabbits, it was so lovely!

I’ll let you know how the apt goes with Christabel.

We went to see Christabel this morning at Twickenham vets, and she was lovely and very warm. She checked both of my rabbits.

Zigzag’s arthritis is worse than we thought especially round his hips and spine. He received some acupuncture today which I hope he enjoyed.

Winnie is getting a referral to an ophthalmologist for her eyes. Over the past year she’s had recurrent ulcers, inflammation and plaques on her eyes. I feel quite relieved that she’s going to be referred, as I’m hoping we can get to the bottom of the issue. We might get referred to somewhere in Portsmouth, so looks like we’ll be hiring a car!

Thanks all for your support

So pleased that you are happy with the Consultation. C has given Acupuncture to a few of my Bunnies and it did help :D

That’s great to hear, I’m a big believer in acupuncture for pets.

The only problem is that the acupuncture ideally needs to take place weekly, and due to work and where we are located this isn’t a realistic option sadly.

C said that Winnie was extremely beautiful and unusual looking. She loved hearing that

Does anyone know of an ophthalmologist in Portsmouth? I forgot to ask the vet this!
Thanks

This sounds like a very thorough consultation. Sending lots of vibes for Winnie's eyes and hope that the referral gives a good result.
