Reading about small animals running on wheels and in balls reminds me how much I enjoyed the animated movie G-Force.
Yeah, I would never tape inside unless no other choice.
I had syrian and small teddy bear hamsters for many years. After much chewing and many escapes, I used a large tank with a screen lid that was secured. The glass sides meant no place to secure freestanding wheel so it sometimes fell over when my hamster tried to climb the outside of the wheel.
I remember getting a plastic wheel-hoping it was quieter, yet it was treated as a chew toy. My plastic wheel had a solid running surface and one day my poor hamster peed on it and then ran which resulted in a soggy stinky hamster.

When they are friendly I don't handle them much when fostering so they don't get attached to me. I only handle frequently if they need socialising or if they bite to get used to handling. I did stroke and touch him anyway, he is too cute. Walter has never tried to bite. He did come from a loving home and you can tell the difference because he is happy and relaxed and social.
Hope you all get to sleep tonight. X
