Joint Supplements

I was wondering if they are any good? Is there any that are recommended? I’ve seen some oxbow ones when doing some googling.
Found out completely by chance that one of my rabbits has a very arthritic knee. He has never shown any signs of any trouble with his legs and he’s only 2. It was found out when being x-rayed for something else. Really wasn’t expecting it at all, he has no issues running around like a loon!

I rate them (the Oxbow ones). Mousey has bad mobility & arthritis (she is on metacam too) - I'd had her on these perhaps 2 years then couldn't get any before Christmas & she deteriorated markedly. Obviously I can't know it was the lack of joint support tabs that caused it but it seems most likely. I've recently started my other 2 bunnies on them as a preventative - they move well but are getting on so I'm hoping they might guard against future joint probs & arthritic pain

Thanks J&B, I’ll give them a go and see what he thinks.
Despite him not showing signs of being arthritic if it’s as bad as it looked in the X-ray he must be in some discomfort with it. He’s on metacam too at the mo after his episode on Wednesday.

I'm looking at this at the moment - to feed 2 giants I think Oxbow is going to be pretty expensive, so I'm looking at the equine supplements (strictly the vegetarian ones, I don't agree with giving horses animal products so I'm certainly not giving it to buns!) and then scaling the dose down. Will have a chat with my vet, but I did wonder if anyone had done this and had a suggestion?
This is my current leader, just need to work out the dosage from the ingredients list compared to Oxbow https://www.viovet.co.uk/GWF-Nutrition-Joint-Aid-Plus-For-Horses/c9107/

I used to give them to my bridge bun Teddy for the stiffness he got through having head tilt and it made a big difference to him. Going to start giving it as a preventative measure soon as Lilac is nearly 7, just need to get round to buying it!

Never used it myself but def worth speaking with your Vet about it :)

Good idea to talk to the vet about it. My dogs are on the equivalent of yumove given in a couple of different supplements meant for humans! Works out much cheaper.

You'd have liked my lockdown vet  (new vet at usual practice). He liked talking about the similarites between rabbits & horses. I called him to discuss using evening primrose on Mouse (which he didn't recommend) & went on to talk about how good Green Lipped Muscle Extract was for horses..when it came down to it I wasn't up for experimenting.

RE: dosage guidelines on the pack. They only go up in a few categories & the last is 2 lozenges for bunnies of 4lb+. I'm curious enough about this to email Oxbow & ask if this dosing regime should be upped for giants.

Joey goes absolutely nuts for these. I vary what time of day I give them & its hilarious how much he starts sucking up to me everytime I go upstairs hoping its scooby snack time

Yeah, the dosing is nowhere near clear enough - above 4lbs is all vey well, but when you have bunnies that are 4 times that at least and one likely to be much more still, I am sceptical that 2 tabs would ever be enough.
That plus I am not overly impressed with the ingredients of Oxbow tbh, there's not a lot in there that is proven to be of benefit compared to the equine one I linked to for example, nor that they don't already get in their diet directly.
Do you man you've actually emailed them? I'd love to know what they say!

Yep I've emailed them & will let you guys know what their response is.

Gotta say without these Mousey got in a right state - couldn't reach her cecos & was smushing them in to her foot. Needed daily bum baths & everything. Its rare I have to clean her up these days. I'll definitely be too scared to stop using them again

Hello Louise,

Thank you for contacting Oxbow Animal Health with your question. We are so glad that Oxbow's joint support supplement has benefited your bun! To answer your question, 2 tablets per day is the maximum recommended dose for this supplement for rabbits 4 lbs and greater due to the active ingredients in the product. However, we always recommend that you work with a trusted veterinarian to determine the most appropriate dosage for your individual animal.

I hope this information helps - if you have further questions please let us know as we would be happy to assist!

Best,

Mikki

I don't really understand but there you go, nothing new there

For me the confusing thing is that under 4lb there is a range, but not over. I wonder which active ingredients.

What an unhelpful answer from Oxbow.

I'd never thought about using the Oxbow ones as a preventitive. I wonder if that could be useful for Sophie and Casper, since they are getting a little older...

I think J&B are similar ish in age to S&C. I started them 2 months ago. Had to give it a lot of thought as I don't think I could stop when started, just in case they actually do work  So I'm committed. They just have 1 tab each a day, Mouse has 2. How much do your bunnies weigh?

I was thinking of starting these for Clementine, I think she'll need Metacam daily soon tbh, the knee ops did leave her with arthritis but she'd been okay.. Also was thinking about Penelope having also now had a knee op.. But yea they're both obviously very big buns, Clementine is around 4.5kg and Penelope is 5kg..so the dosage is weird..

everybuns gonna think I've got shares in Oxbow:lol: You could ask your specialist their view of them. I think Phillps mum was going to ask Uncle Johns opinion. Ruth said she'd heard good reports about the dog equivalent, had owners dog have relapse but recovered after restarting them but not heard much in the context of rabbits. The reviews always seem very positive - for those bunnies that will eat them

William was never sure they did much a few years back when I asked, but said can't hurt.

Ivone said she wasn't sure either, and mainly they had trouble getting buns to eat them (not an issue I've had [emoji38]) but said was happy for me to give them if they'd eat them. (this was for the whole range, I've used the urinary support ones before and both the gut ones)

So yeaa Idk really!

Both my bunnies take them. Tethra because he has Arthritis, is already on Metacam and has quite poor mobility now. Tui has them as well, but for her it's more as a preventative as she's a giant rabbit.

I can't say for sure whether they have improved Tethra, but I'm willing to continue as of course he could be worse without them. The tablets contain Glucosamine, which, as far as I know, is long term in its effect on the joints. I don't think it will reverse the condition, but could prevent it becoming worse. I think the pain-relieving/anti-inflammatory element in the tablets is the Turmeric.
