Rabbit Has Bloody Poop

Hello, I'm really scared so I just made an account to post this. All the vets are closed otherwise I would take her right now, but I have to wait until morning. My female rabbit, Lily, is spayed and 8 years old. She has existing health problems. She can't pee on her own. We had her x-rayed and checked and every other thing possible, but the multiple vets we took her too couldn't find out what the problem was. Since she was acting happy and normal (eating fine and pooping fine), we decided to just gently squeeze her bladder over a litter box three times a day. This was over a year ago and it's now a routine. She's a very happy bunny and likes to run around and jump and play. Tonight when I went to relieve her I noticed blood stains in her cage and I picked her up and her anus was bloody. Her poop is normal looking but covered in blood, but she's eating fine and acting normal. I don't see any exterior wounds or anything weird looking about her butt so I don't know what's wrong. There aren't any rabbit specialists nearby at all (we live in a rural area), but the vet we are hopefully seeing tomorrow has experience with rabbits. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this? I've had her since elementary school and I'm in college now. I love her so much and I'm very worried.

Are you certain the blood is coming from her anus and not from her vagina ? It really is impossible to say what may be wrong, but given her history of loss of bladder control it may be that the blood is from her urinary tract not her GI tract.She may have bladder sludge/stones which can cause symptoms including blood in the urine. Has she ever had any diagnostics to try to establish why she cannot empty her bladder - abdominal Xrays, blood tests including PCR testing for EC titres ?

If the blood is from her anus, is bright red and not mixed in with fecal output it may be due to an anal fissure or polyp.

But all of the above are just guesses. Hopefully you will be able to access Veterinary help for her today. Good luck.

Yes we made sure it wasn't from her vagina. We've done blood tests, x-rays, and I'm pretty sure PCR testing but still no answer. It only seems to be coming out when she poops, but that might be just because she's moving the muscle. Thank you for the response, I appreciate it!

I am sorry to read this but I’ve been through this very recently with one of my rabbits and it sounds like cystitis. It is treatable and recovery can be quick but it is vital and essential you get lily to a vet ASAP. Please ring first thing and explain the situation and have lily ready to go to the vet.

Anal/rectal polyps or a fissure sound to be a possibility. The Vet may need to do a GA/endoscopy.

Hello again. Lily wasn't doing well this morning. She wasn't eating or drinking and there was no poop in her cage, but still lots of blood. Lily is at the vet for blood work but just received an x-ray. The x ray shows kidney stones which have caused an intestinal infection explaining the bleeding. She isn't digesting her food. Her heartbeat is also very concerning at 310. I'm waiting for her blood work results which I will get in about an hour. The vet said this is treatable unless the blood work shows kidney failure or other problems. Thank you for the well wishes

Definitely good news!! While she is not out of the woods yet, the blood tests weren't concerning so she doesn't have any other serious issues. She's home on pain meds, antibiotics, and we are giving her fluids with an IV every 12 hours along with syringe feeding her liquid food to get her digestion going. Hopefully she makes a full recovery, she's very feisty so I have high hopes. Thank you!!

Sorry to hear that she has kidney stones and I do hope that her treatment will get her feeling more comfortable, did the Vet say if both kidneys are effected ?.

The vet didn't say if both were affected. I would assume both from how she talked, but I don't know for sure.
