  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Do rabbit nails ever stop growing?

I know it can happen with their teeth but do nails ever stop growing. Went to give Mousey her pedicure & they don't seem to have grown at all. It won't be wear through movement (just in case anybody reading this is unfamiliar with my Mouseypie (PS where you been ?) it won't be wear from movement

I imagine it could be possible in older rabbits due to different nutrient requirements etc.

I've no idea if its possible but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be.

I've noticed that the nails of older animals do seem to grow more slowly. They also get more 'solid', so maybe don't wear down quite the same. My older cats don't need their claw tips doing nearly as much as the younger ones (all indoor cats between 3 & 16 years old). The nails of baby rabbits & cats, on the other hand, do seem to grow at an alarming rate.

Now you come to mention it, Treacles do seem to have slowed down this past year or so, and she's 7 3/4 now :D

Smudge’s nails weren’t growing, neither was his fur though - I’m guessing it was due to the cancer. Imogen’s nails still need trimming regularly and she’s 11.

Tui's nails have never needed trimming. She's 3. I don't know whether it's because they've never grown or whether she wears them down on the concrete.

Thanks everybun. I would expect a healthy outside bunny to (probably) need very few pedicures. I think it must be an age / health combo then

Joey is 10 in Spring & his need for pedicures hasn't diminished

Aboleth had maybe a claw clip every 2yrs, Lopsy might have had one on his first ever vet visit, and Chibbs needs her tips doing every 6m because she's got 'very sharp claws' apparently! She's the most active and diggy of the lot as well. An enigma.
