  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bunny died in operation - guilt

I'm so sorry for your loss. I understand completely how you feel. And it was absolutely not your fault!

I spayed my 8 month old doe a while back. She survived the actual spay but didn't recover after. She was getting worse and worse and was so tense in her abdomen. She went through ultrasounds and bloodsamples and finally a resurgery a week later and her abdomen was filled with fluid and there was a lot of inflammation. One of the kidneys was also fluidfilled and enlarged. The vet said there was nothing more to be done and she died during the second anesthesia. The post mortem didn't give us any answears to why she reacted like she did. Me and my oh was totally devastated and we blamed ourselves, we still do:cry:
She was the most beautiful and kind little bunny.

Walli, I am sorry for your loss of Anita. It must have been so heart wrenching for you and your family.
I have a 12 week old female I know will need to be spayed and it can be so worrying when they are under GA for the first time. Yet after dealing with uterine cancer, I know it is for the best. (I posted a picture on RU of the size of the tumors compared to the size of the bunny and she must have been in awful pain.)
