Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Abcess on cheek

New Kit
Just after any words of wisdom.
Wed night I went out to feed my rabbits at 8pm and one of them face looked deformed. Her eye was bulging so much. I have never seen anything like it!
We took her to the emergency vets that evening which apart from her having 2 doses of metacam and 1 dose of something else before seeing her normal vets the next day was a waste of time.
She had an abcess, the vet tried to drain it but a lot was really think.
She has been on Baytril twice a day since and her face looks good again abd she has put weight on but the lump on her cheek was getting bigger again. Vet tried to drain it again today and has said I'm to book her in next week to have it washed out under anaesthetic.
I was just wondering if anybody has experienced this before.
Her teeth have always been fine until this summer when at age 4 1/2 they have started growing wonkey and she has to have them trimmed every few weeks .

I'm going to ask the vet when she phones with my estimate.
She looked that bad on Wed night we thought the emergency vets might say she needs to be pts.

My Doe had an abscess on her cheek, which my vet completely excised, packed the site with antibiotic beads and then she had Penicillin injections for a while afterwards. She was lucky and it didn't return.

Sending lots of vibes for your bunny. I hope she gets on well.

I've had 2 rabbits with dental abscesses. Both had surgery to open the abscess site, which can look a bit gruesome, but does work. The idea is to get it to heal properly from the inside, so it is stitched open. The hole was flushed twice a day then filled with medical grade manuka honey. They were also on long term penicillin injections (daily or every other day) and pain relief (oral metacam). I did all the daily cleaning and injections at home once the nurses showed me how.

If your vet is not used to dealing with abscesses in rabbits, it's worth asking them to refer you to a specialist. Much of the diagnosis etc can be determined by your vet sending the notes and xrays to the specialist before you see them. Mine cost the same as my regular vet, and care was transferred back to them after surgery, which was easier for ongoing follow up appointments and drugs, etc.

I've been happy with the care my vet has given her.
The emergency vets is one I have never been to. I arrived at 8.30pm passed her in at the door then sat in my car for 2 hours without even a phone call to tell me what was going on. I phoned up and was told "I was just about you phone you, I've triaged her and she does need to see the vet " 🙄 I only live 5 mins away so at that point I went home and phoned back at midnight to ask if I could pick her up and just take her to my vets first thing, at this point she was in with the vet who phoned me to say she thought it was an abcess and to take her to my vet in the morning. They prescribed her metacam and another drug begging with m that we had to start that night . They phoned at 12.30am to take payment then we could go and pick her up.
I really don't know if we did the right thing taking her that night as it must have been really distressing for her in the vets all that time but on the other hand she had 2 doses of metacam and 1 of the other medicine before her appointment the following day which I was pleased about.
We just thought a 24/7 vets would have enough staff during the night although I think they cover emergencies for a wider area so that could be why they were so busy?

Poor Bunny  Did the Vet take skull radiographs when the tooth was removed ?

I hope Bunny will eventually make a recovery x

Just an update! Her abcess burst the day before her planned operation so the vet washed it and sent her home with stronger baytrill, meloxaid and something to flush the hole in her abcess lump. We went back after 10 days and were told to carry on with the treatment. Due to go back on Mon and its looking really good. The lump has almost gone .
She has been such a good patient!!

Great news ! Medical grade Manuka Honey is great for plugging open abscess capsules.

I've ordered a tube of manuka honey. Shame its not here yet as the abcess had burst again this morning so I would have liked to put some on the hole.
On Mondays check up the vet prescribed another antibiotic onto of the baytril but the dose is 3.5ml twice a day. We have given it twice but feel it is unfair as so much so are sticking to the baytril and meloxaid. She has coped really well with her treatment but wasn't happy after that large dose.
Its such a roller coaster nursing this rabbit!! Tue morning i felt really deflated as thought it had got bigger and we felt it was cruel to be giving her 5 syringes in 1 gov(twice a day 3x1ml new antibiotic, 0.5 new antibiotic and 0.3 baytrill) but today I am really happy as it has burst properly and is the smallest its been.
