Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Megacolon?

Hi. So my 1 year old bunny has always had really loud stomach noises. She has never reacted to them, so i haven’t taken her to the vet. Her poops are also weird, often oval, smelly, kind of wet? Her diet is mainly hay, with few greens. So i have been scared that she has megacolon, but she should’nt have the gene. I just have really bad luck with my bunnies no matter how well i take care of them. My other bunny just died and now i am very paranoid. I am taking her to the vet soon, but i don’t know how it is diagnosed if she doesn’t even have symptoms. Can anyone help?

Yeah i have read it, pretty much everything that is available i have read. She doesn’t have the diarrhea, but i read that the symptoms usually start at age three.

I would discuss the situation with your Vet. If your Rabbit is asymptomatic then really I do not think running diagnostics would be of much use. If, however, your Rabbit does have symptoms strongly indicating Megacolon then your Vet may suggest some blood tests and an abdominal ultrasound.

Why do you say she shouldn't have the gene? I had two dwarf Himalayan colored brothers with megacolon. The both had symptoms at 2 months of age.

Was your last rabbit vaccinated? What is your bunnies diet? There can be a number of reasons for stomach issues in a rabbit.
