  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Beware of OTC Bloat Treatments

Thanks for posting the link Jane,

I know a lot of people swear by infacol but I've always struggled to understand how it can work effectively in rabbits. Mainly because it's designed to help babies burp out excess gas, which is something bunnies can't do.

We used to get forum badgered quite alot (alot) to use infracol in days gone by. Was a pain in the bum it being discussed so much & distracting away from things that might help

We've always used it in the kind of just in case it helps really. Only alongside medicines though.

To be fair the vet shrugged and said it wont hurt when I asked if it helped.

For the gas attacks Rosie used to have, it was always metacam and randitine first, then food then infacol if I had it.

Often they did pass with that but then I do wonder if it was just the painkillers triggering her to eat and moving everything through with the ranitidine.

I think the essence of the message from the RWAF is that no OTC treatment should be given without first consulting a Vet. There was a time on here when someone advocated giving Infacol as a first line of treatment without having the Rabbit examined by a Vet first.

Yeah, I remember when years and years ago, not specifically on here, but on rabbit websites in my country, the general advice was to give Infacol first and if that didn't help, then you should consult a vet, instead doing that right away. The RWAF's message is much better. Not only is it not certain that the Infacol will do anything, but while someone's trying that out valuable time will be lost where the bunny could be getting proper vet care.
