  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vibes needed for Phillip and Britney

I don't know what to do  I don't know whether to stress him out with the emergency vet or wait. He seems to have lost control over his bowels and bladder tonight

Oh no could you give the vets a call and see what they think?

I know often they'll insist on seeing them anyway but it might be worth a try.

With ours I listed what I had to hand medicines and care wise and she told me what to do at home first.

Such a difficult decision. Would your specialist be able to see him earlier / tomorrow? If you call specialists as OOH who does it get diverted to? Because of his other health problems I'd really want his expert vet to see him if possible. If he is lethargic or out of sorts OOH but if he is still bright, eating & drinking I'd try & hang on til morning. Of course the decision is so much harder cos if its EC related it can be exacerbated by stress. Good luck with a really hard decision

He went really hunched and withdrawn and stopped eating about an hour ago and started lunging at the girls, so I called the OOH but it's not a specialist one and they were dealing with an emergency so couldn't give advice and just said to bring him down if I could. He's just started nibbling on some pellets and I've given him some emeprid to try and settle his stomach. He's still weeing everywhere. I'm really not sure what to do. Nearest emergency vets is 20 mins away, nearest specialist OOH is Anton which is an hour away. If it was the weekend I'd go to Anton but I have work early tomorrow which I know is less important than Phillip but it's still a problem. I could probably get an emergency appointment with a local vet in the morning at 9 (non-specialist but trust them).

Could you not ring Anton and have a video/ zoom appointment?

They don’t appear to offer those OOH from what I can see.

However he’s just demolished a pile of parsley in seconds so that’s something.

I think given that he’s just eaten, and whether or not this is the right decision I don’t know but I think I’m going to just ring the vet first thing unless he gets worse again.

Such a hard decision, but if he's eating that's got to be a positive sign, in your situation think I'd do the same. Sending loads of vibes for your boy xxx

Poor Philip 😔

Given that he's eating again now, I would also hold off taking him to the OOH vet tonight. I wonder if he had a bit of an upset stomach earlier and it's started to settle down now.

I’m sorry Philip has had this episode. Given what you have described I think I would be doing exactly the same as you and waiting til this morning and making the vet call.
Topping up the vibes and hope you can get Phillip seen today and the vet can get a diagnosis for Phillip. Xx

He’s quite active - woke us up this morning by jumping on the bed. We left the door open last night as he seemed to want to only sit with us in our room. He ate a load more parsley around 12.30am but isn’t interested in much else. He’s nibbled a few mint leaves. Going to ring the vet as soon as they open.

Maybe last night's 'episode' was an angina attack ?

Sending lots more vibes for him

I guess that’s a possibility, hadn’t thought of that.

My husband said he ate a ton of dandelion leaves this morning after I’d booked the vets. They managed to squeeze him in at 10am and he’s being kept in all day for fluids, feeding, blood tests and monitoring which is good. He may need an ultrasound next week dependent on how today goes. I sent my husband in with an A4 page of notes describing how he’d been and what treatment he’d had at home. The vet said it was just perfect [emoji23][emoji23]

Britney and Whitney have hoovered up all the food that was left by Phillip this morning [emoji23]

I'm glad Phillip has been eating and active and is now at the vets being cared for. I hope the tests will be able to tell you what's going on with him.

Britney and Whitney must've enjoyed the leftover food, haha.
