Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Jelly is being referred to another vet

Thank you for all your help everybody. Jane, Jelly isn’t insured, I did phone the practice you mentioned but they said that Jelly would have to be referred from the other vets, so that is still an option. I decided to phone the vet that i am waiting on test results from, I do think writing a letter would have been better but I just want things to move a bit quicker, I can always do a proper written complaint but I want some progress for Jelly.

I planned to be firm but polite on the phone, the receptionist answered and I burst into tears so not the best start! She said the vet that is dealing with Jelly is in today and she’s put a note for him to call me today because he does have her results. Having read the article you linked Jane, I’ve decided to take the rabbits out of the shed, I’ve always felt something in the shed wasn’t right and I think it’s for the best. I had to rush back to work for a couple of hours so unfortunately they’re in a dog crate in my bedroom at the moment but I’ll be home in a short while and can make better arrangements for them.

I’m looking at it now that they may not be able to do anything other than make her comfortable, I don’t know if that’s right. I really want to know what’s going on with her and what’s caused this. I’m also worried about Felix, should I expect the same thing to happen to him?

Thank you so much for all your help everyone, I’ll post when I hear from the vet (hopefully today)

There is no reason to think that Felix will be effected by the same condition, it’s not contagious. I hope the Vet will actually call you this afternoon x

Do you think they might phone after evening surgery? No I think perhaps I’m being too charitable.
Disgusting!

OMG  So next I'd call & say you want to talk to the Practice Manager - nobody else. Or write to them

It's beyond belief that they could be so dreadful :( I agree need to contact the Practice Manager.

That is so awful and unprofessional of the veterinary service:evil:
I got so angry and sad when reading that you still haven't got Jellys results:(
Perhaps you could take her to another specialist. And have the test tesults sent there so you don't have to pay for the same things again. And then complain to the Practice manager!

Perhaps I spoke a bit soon, the vet did eventually ring but I’m still not very happy. She’s tested negative for e.cuniculi and I’ve been told to monitor her and he’ll ring next week for an update to see if she’s still showing the same symptoms.

It’s just frustrating to spend all that money and do all these tests and I still feel like there’s no idea. I’ve brought them both in for now, they’re in a dog crate which isn’t ideal but Jelly seems to have perked up a bit. I’ve got it in my head that something in the shed is causing these problems. She ate all her food this evening and keeps going back to the hay although she’s still acting a bit odd.

I'm sorry you're none the wiser. It feels a bit like they are good at doing diagnostics but when they've thrown nothing up they've sat back & considered it job done.

I still think you've got grounds for complaint & at the very least a (free) referral to a specialist - perhaps Andover? Get some expert eyes on her paperwork & notes

What do you plan to do next?

Can you post a video of her when she is ‘acting odd’ ?

I’ll try and get a video. I’m beginning to doubt myself now, my friend came round last night and Jelly lived with him for a few months a few years ago so he knows her quite well and he said she seems like she’s not 100% but he doesn’t think she seems that different from normal. She ate her food fairly quickly last night, I didn’t even separate her from Felix because I was sat watching them and she ate all of it. The only thing that’s changed is she’s out of the shed and inside. I don’t know whether to just carry on and try and put it to the back of my mind or whether to get another opinion. She seems well this morning too, she came out the dog crate and was running around my sitting room

Hi everyone, Jelly has started coughing the last few days, but has had more good days than bad recently. I’ve phoned the vet this morning and mentioned the coughing, just waiting for a call back. Does anyone have any experience of coughing?

Yes, in cases of heart disease or Thymoma x

That’s worrying Jane :( the vet called back and wants a video of Jelly coughing as soon as possible. I think I’m going to struggle, I’ve been trying to get a video the last few days but as it’s fairly regularly but not constantly I’ve never managed to get it. I’m hoping to finish work early today and I’m just going to sit by their crate with a camera pointed at her and hope I catch something but as I say it’s not constant so I don’t know if I will. I don’t really know what to do

I'm sorry that Jelly is still causing concern :(

Perhaps I'm being a bit intolerant, but I think if this was my rabbit I would want her to have some relevant diagnostics done with a guarantee of getting a result. Perhaps you could see if you could get her seen in Andover.

Sending you lots of hugs too. You are having such an unbelievable uphill struggle with trying to get help for Jelly.

I phoned the vets at Andover and they wanted a £130 referral charge before she is even seen. I understand vets need to make a living but having just spent the best part of £600 with one vet and having no answers I’m a bit reluctant to start over again with another vet in case the same thing happens. I’ve left my iPad recording the cage, no cough. So frustrating

Sorry if I've missed it, what tests has Jelly had so far? It must be really frustrating/upsetting to have a referral yet no answers, I don't see how the vets think it was good practice to leave things like this. I've had one rabbit with heart problems (he used to cough, raise his head to breathe) and was diagnosed through an X ray and ultrasound.

That’s exactly what she does! She’s had an x-ray, and I’m not entirely sure what other tests, she’s been tested for e.cuniculi and that was negative. The x ray showed her heart was enlarged and her lungs were cloudy but this was never mentioned again. He did go through the tests but we were both wearing masks and my hearing isn’t great and he had an accent and I was quite stressed so to be honest I didn’t catch all of it. I’m still trying to get a video of her coughing but she’s conveniently stopped now! Sorry I’m not particularly helpful, I might email the vet and question the x ray and see if there’s anything from that we can go on, because surely an enlarged heart and cloudy lungs aren’t normal
