  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi a while ago I posted about Norah my bunny who has ongoing ear infections and cysts, we decided against surgery and we are just doing palliative care.
We decided to do antibiotics for a while and then stop and then start again when she goes downhill.
Before she was on baytril long term twice per day and metrodonazole twice per day for only 2 weeks.
She came off all the antibiotics last Wednesday it's been a week and she is already showing signs of declining. So we are now trying penicillin injections once per week, back on baytril ,metacam and metrodonazole.
The baytril this time is reduced to 0.57 once per day, before it was twice per day. I have seen numerous vets and specialists and the vet who decided on these doses is very rabbit savvy and she spoke to someone in edinburgh who specialises in rabbits about whether this is best route to take for norah, considering surgery is completely out of the question.
Has anybody had good success with the injections?
She is taking
Metacam once per day 0.57
Metrodonazole 0.75ml twice per day
Baytril once per day 0.57 ml
And the penicillin injection once per week.
Does this sound ok. Obviously at this point I'm willing to try anything and everything.
Thank you again
It's such a worry.
Xxxx

My Inspector Morse was on long term Depocillin injections for his ear disease. He had his injections every other day for 2 weeks then every 3 days thereafter. He was on oral Metronidazole and Oral Metacam too

Yes its depocillin I couldn't remember the name.

So the Injections can be increased, that is really good to know.

Did the medication keep him going for a long time?

I am so worried nothing works and I have to say goodbye.
I really don't think the baytril touches the infection to be honest but I maybe wrong. Xxxx

Yes, the treatment bought him a good couple of years. He actually passed away due to an inoperable mass in his abdomen, not due to ear disease x

I've used depocillin injections long term up to daily in some cases of jaw abscesses in rabbits, so there is certainly room to manouvre.

My late Gemini had chronic ear infections. Baytril helped initially, yet soon did little to halp. Oral Sulfa-Trim worked almost a year. Bicillin injections also gave him more months. He passed from unknown cause.
