  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ongoing skin issue

Young Bun
I don't know if anyone has any advice for me dealing with my buns skin complaint. My bonded pair are rescue, aged 5-7years and are outdoors. My neutered male has been losing vast amounts of fur mostly on back, tummy and legs, red and cracked skin, licking lots.
Treated with ivermectin and less reddened but continues to lose more fur. Bunny mate has absolutely zero health issues and skin is perfext. Been to vets today and they have checked skin scraped under the microscope and there's no parasites. They are suggesting maybe a stress response or age related. Nothing I can pin down that could cause any new bouts of stress, no changes. But as the days creep into Autumn, the poor dude is going to freeze :(

Did the Vet suggest any other diagnostics ?

Is Bunny otherwise well within himself ? No unexplained weight loss ?

No other diagnosis offered. Multiple skin scrapes just show flaky skin. No other signs of illness, eating and drinking as normal. Socialising and exploring as normal. Suggested I could continue ivermectin treatment but have been using for 2.5 months now with no response and there are clearly no mites to be treated!
If a human, it's like ezcema plus alopecia but vet is at a loss of any treatment.
Any body ever used any moisturising cream for rabbits?

No offer of any other diagnostics.... Sorry I realise you mean tests too! Just that I could continue the topical ivermectin to see if any improvement

Yes that's a really great consideration I don't think the vet considered. Definitely something to go back with and get checked, thank you
