  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Injury during bonding

drmag

Young Bun
I have been bonding neutered male and neutered female together. (Side by side enclosures 1 week then dating together.)

Long story short : female bit male and I didn't see he has a laceration (bite through skin.) He has very long hair so was missed. It has been there >24 hours - essentially we noticed when it came to brushing him a day later.
It has scabbed over and looks clean, he has been eating drinking and running around normally since.

Long story:
They were fine for 6 hours together (were sleeping cuddling and purring.) I wasn't looking directly at them when it happened but heard a scuffle when I looked my doe had his hair in her mouth and he looked angry and was jumping up and down on her. She was sitting down like she did something naughty.
It took him a while to calm down, I checked them both didn't see any blood /injuries at time and put them back together. They calmed down and once ok I gave them a break for an hour to run around and put them back together later for 2 hours and they returned to normal behaviour (cuddling grooming.)

Do I necessarily have to have him seen at vets ?

Impossible to say without being able to see the injury. If it is a puncture wound then it can be at risk of abscessating as it will heal over on the surface but there could be lots of bacteria and necrotic tissue underneath.
