  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Penelope injured leg :(

Is William a good surgeon? If so I'd go with him . He obv is rabbit / exotics vet so will understand all the GA & recovery foits to the 9th degree, I dunno how much working on a different species would affect things. If its rare in bunnies how many has the ortho specialist done ? That might be useful to know x

I can't change this word as I've no idea what I meant to write

Firstly it's excellent news that there's nothing else going on with her.

Regarding which surgeon to opt for, I certainly would remove any question of cost out of the equation. I would purely choose on the basis of who, with all the information you have, do you consider would do a better job. I say this, because I think, like me, this would be the most important factor for you. What you don't want is to get to a stage post-op when you think to yourself, if only I hadn't taken that factor into account.

I think you've had experience of both surgeons and only you will be able to determine what your gut feeling is and whatever that is, I would go with it.

William is excellent, he did all my buns neuters and helped with Clementines knees

William will be there either way to do the anesthetic. I don't think the specialist has ever done it on a bun... William has done it on dogs, a cat, and a lizard [emoji38]

That's exactly what I'm thinking, originally I was thinking specialist, but after speaking with William this evening and him saying how it's quite an easy op I was swayed. He thinks he could do it, and it's confident to. I really don't know! Plus this is a different one to who did Clementines knees. It's 1500 or 700 so not as bad as I originally thought, I guess my issue is Idk who would be better, I have a feeling they'd be very similar if not the same [emoji51]

William does sound very experienced with this procedure, and I would have thought a lizard probably as tricky as it gets ! Good luck whatever you decide, sounds like she's in very safe hands xxx

I would be pleased at these quotes. Not because they are less money to pay, but because to me it represents that the operation is not as difficult and requiring of special skills as when you thought it was going to cost thousands.

Doesn't affect your decision at all, but it's something to bear in mind.

Yea it definitely sounded bleaker this morning. Still don't know what to do though [emoji38]

Lizard knees sound like they'd be different to cat or dog, moreso than rabbit? But they're all less bouncy, except maybe cats... Hmm, yeah, difficult!

Other thing is William could do it this week, whereas I'm not sure for the specialist

Could it be related to the sedation?? Bigwig was sedated recently and her eyes very watery/fur a bit matted from drops they use to keep the eye lubricated during the sedation. That's just a complete guess though

Maybe, I've never had this before :( she is barely keeping that eye open :(

Does it wear off on its own?

This is what I was going to suggest. I haven't experienced it, but I remember it being mentioned on here previously.

Oh Gracie I don’t know I have never seen that before :( hopefully Jane will come along soon :( do you think it’s connected? I am sorry you are going through this xxx

I think I would be tempted to go with William as he is bunny savvy for example I would happily choose John if he said he could do something himself although never done it before on that species hmm. Maybe have a sleep on it I always make better decisions in the morning
