Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Penelope injured leg :(

Oh Gracie I don’t know I have never seen that before :( hopefully Jane will come along soon :( do you think it’s connected? I am sorry you are going through this xxx

I think I would be tempted to go with William as he is bunny savvy for example I would happily choose John if he said he could do something himself although never done it before on that species hmm. Maybe have a sleep on it I always make better decisions in the morning

Good luck Gracie. You may be better with William doing surgery since he has a broader knowledge base re rabbits, plus Penelope specific information.
I hope her droopy lower eyelid is sorted overnight and was just related to her sedation. I bet William will know.

Is William a good surgeon? If so I'd go with him . He obv is rabbit / exotics vet so will understand all the GA & recovery foits to the 9th degree, I dunno how much working on a different species would affect things. If its rare in bunnies how many has the ortho specialist done ? That might be useful to know x

I agree with this

Sending vibes and hoping that you are at or near a decision that you are comfortable with.

Not that you are asking what other people would do and there are factors to be weighted up that only you can weigh up, but my instinct would lean very much towards having a known and trusted vet do the operation.

Thanks everyone, still thinking about it. Her eye looks much better this morning, almost back to normal which is great :) she's such an angel, takes her loxicom straight from the syringe like it's a treat [emoji38]

Bless her  it must be such a hard decision to have to make.
Yea, I really don't know, I'm tempted to go with William because I trust him, tbh if I needed an operation I'd probably want William to do it [emoji38] but then I'm worried I'm not picking the best thing for her? Plus William said the orthopaedic surgeon is really excellent... So the fact that he says that, he must be.. I'm worried I'm picking the known option but just because it don't know the orthopaedic guy doesn't mean anything.. [emoji38] I guess it's fear of the unknown. I know William would do an amazing job. If anyone had to operate on any of my animals I'd want it to be William or Ivone, every time. Clementines surgery was much more complex, so it was a bit different.. So tricky! The money doesn't bother me, it's just knowing which is best, vs what feels more comfortable to me I think (which shouldn't really factor in, but it's influencing me) [emoji51] William would be there either way though which is comforting.

This is what I was thinking as well :)

It's not often a rabbit owner has the dilemma of having to choose between two experts, normally we struggle to find just one!

I have to admit that I'm swinging backwards and forwards myself on this one. I think the advantage of going with the orthopaedic surgeon is that William is still going to be present during the op. So essentially you wouldn't have to choose as you'd have both of them. Kind of like double bagging!

I know only you can make the decision but if finances permit and as long as William will definitely be present during the Surgery I'd want the Orthopod Vet to do the actual surgery and William the GA/monitoring. As J+B pointed out having an Exotics Vet do the GA would be a real bonus. That way Penelope will have 2 Vets and a VN in attendance. Each Vet carrying out their own individual specialities :D Good luck with whatever you decide xx

I might come to a different conclusion if I were in your shoes and knew William personally etc, but Jane's thoughts mirror exactly what I have been thinking since yesterday evening.

Sending hugs. These decisions are really tough.
