Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mites

Hi
This isnt directly about rabbits but my friend who has rabbits also has guinea pigs and they have an outbreak of mites. She has been to the vets and got treatment for all of them except for one guinea pig.
This one gpig is pregnant and vet says cant be treated until babies are born. She is quite heavily infested and itchy. Does anyone know of any alternative treatments that are safe for a pregnant guinea pig?
Thanks

Maybe a bath with non pesticide shampoo (baby shampoo?) would help. It might decrease the numbers and make her skin less itchy atleast. Perhaps running a flea comb through during the bath would also help remove some.

I'd check with the vet first what they think of the idea though.

I've just suggested this and my friend says the stress of teh bath would probably not be a good thing. :( She says the gpig is quite big now so hopefully doesnt have too much longer to go.
Thanks

www.gorgeousguineas.co.uk do some lovely oil soaks for mites but again you would need to bath her and I am not sure about whether they are safe for pregnant GPs!

Edit: just checked - not suitable for pregnant sows!!

Try listereen mouthwash its used in america and is not bad just a couple of drops on the back of the neck, if they are bad it may not cure but it may give some relief for a while. val
