Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi everyone

Over the past few weeks my litter trained rabbit has started weeing just outside of his litter tray it’s happened about 4/5 times now and has never done it before, he’s 4 and a half. He’s also started sleeping on the kitchen floor which he also never does. We’ve recently had work done on our house so the house has had a few changes and also unfamiliar people have been in and out, I’m assuming it’s more than likely down this change in environment.

Other than this he is eating and pooing as normal, I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this before with their rabbit and if anyone has any advice.

Thanks

It may well be that he is reacting to the changes in his environment. That said, there are other possible causes too such as arthritic pain making it difficult for him to hop into his litter tray. Is his urine output normal-ie no signs of him straining to wee, no signs of 'chalky' wee ? Rabbits with a UTI and/or 'bladder sludge' may lose their litter tray training habits.

Is he maintaining his weight- no unexplained weight loss ? Unexplained weight loss and behavioural changes often indicate an underlying health problem.

I agree with JJ, he might be being a bit territorial over the changes. Is he neutered?

Thanks both for getting back to me!

No his urine seems normal and I can’t see any sludge in it. However when he has weed outside the tray some had splashed on to the side of the hutch (indoors) and it was white coloured so maybe it could be a UTI. I will make an apt with his vet tomorrow just in case. Also yes he is neutered.
