Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Papilloma?

I'm not 100% if that's the right term, it's what the vet said it was (sounded like anyway)

Apparently Penelope has one on the right side of her mouth, nearly touching the tooth.. Vet said its fine and nothing needs to happen.. But does anyone know what causes this? And anything I need to look out for? Googling it brought up some really scary pictures and now I'm really worried about Penelope :( also wondering if we should have it removed..? Vet said it was a small benign tumour.. Would he be able to tell this just from looking at it? I'd rather have that tested and be 100% sure.. The vet is an exotic specialist.

She also has bumble foot, which is sore hocks right? But again nothing needs to be done atm.. She's also overweight.. Not sure what we can do about that.. Apricot is perfect weight and healthy though apparently.. Idk what we are doing wrong tbh.

Papillomas are usually viral. If they are removed they often just come back. So if they are not causing any problems then they are best left alone.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/ar...ffers notably from,Shope virus and vice versa.

Yes, bumblefoot is sore hocks. As you probably know being overweight does increase the risk of the Rabbit developing sore hocks or for the condition to worsen. Does she have any pellet feed ? If so could you cut it down/out (gradually and only if she eats lots of hay ) xx

Is it contagious? :( Is it likely to grow? The images online are so scary, I don't want that happening in her mouth. I'll have a read of that link thank you.

Yea I know, nope no pellets just hay and a packet of dill every night, and some forage every so often and anything I pick from the garden.

In the hutch there's so much hay everywhere, she just walks on hay.. But the runaround tunnel can't be great on her feet? The run has loads of soft bark chippings it's actually super spongy so I doubt that's an issue. Idk how this happens.. Apricot and Atticus struggle to keep their weight on and Clementine and Penelope are overweight... Realistically Penelope needs to lose about 300g..whereas Clementine is ridiculously overweight... But Idk what to do about it.. Again Penelope is lazier than Apricot who is always going absolutely nuts in the run.. Penelope does some binkies in the morning and evening and has a gentle hop about.. Maybe that's the issue.. Idk.

My dog has papilloma's round his mouth, they're often easy to diagnose just by looking as they're quite distinctive. They can be contagious as far as I know, being viral. My dogs haven't grown he's had them about 6 months now.

The oral papilloma virus is not the same as the cotton tail papilloma virus. The latter being far more contagious and the growths can be huge. Hence the reporting of sightings of 'horned' cottontail Rabbits.
Sometimes OPV growths resolve on their own. Lord H has several in his ears and one on an eyelid. The ones in his ears are gradually disappearing. The one on his eyelid is not causing any problems atm, but if it grows he may have to have it removed as it could start to rub on his eyeball.

IME it is often Does who struggle to keep their weight down. They seem to lay down fat far more readily than Bucks. And of course certain breed types have a predisposition for weight gain, especially NZWs and Californians. That is why they are used for Meat Farming

Years ago my bridge bunny , Sable, had the same type of growth in the corner of her mouth. It stayed the same for a long time and eventually fell off. None of my other bunnies got it and neither did I-I held her near my own face each night too.
Jane is right that females are more prone to being overweight even when on a no/low pellet diet. My first mini rex was beyond overweight-and always hungry. My current, second mini rex, Heidi, also gains weight quickly.

Oh gawd could humans potentially get it? [emoji21][emoji21][emoji21] I was kissing her all over her face before the vets [emoji38] Penelope snuggles are rare and I took full advantage of her snuggling up on me [emoji51]

Okay thanks for this, do I need to worry about Apricot catching it?

Yea I really don't know what to do with Penelope, I'm not sure how I can get her to lose weight

I did not mean to alarm you. My comment was intended to show you it could not have been contagious or I certainly would have contracted it.

IKWYM . My last two bunnies are not lap bunnies like my Madelyn.
