Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hey Everyone!

Our bunny stopped eating quite a lot and we are worried.

So the whole 'story' starts with my partner and I moving from Germany to Edinburgh and leaving our two bunnies (Lana and Coin) behind at a friends. Nothing really changed at that point, they were both eating well.

After two months we finally got them back with us and we were super happy. The drive was an 8 hour drive in a car in a big box so they could walk around, then in a pet carrier on the ferry over night and then back into the box another 8 hours in the car. So in total about more than 24 hours. They always had water and food with them though.

After arriving in Edinburgh, the older one, Lana started eating a bit less than in the old place. She used to be manic for food and run when she heard the food bag rustling. We figured that it must be the move and she needed a bit of time adjusting and left it be. After another 4 weeks, she suddenly became super sleepy, had her eyes almost shut and ate even less, to almost nothing. She also sneezed a little more than usual. We went to the vet and they gave us eye drops and painkillers. We did those two things for about a week and she got better, her eyes were mostly open but still not caring much about food.

After another week, she got slightly worse again, lots more sneezing and a slightly runny nose, so we went to the vet once again. The vet gave us different eye drops, apparenty steriods, thought it might be an allergic reaction. We used them for 5 days and her eyes and nose got so much better, still sneezing though, but her appetite was still not there. She drinks a*lot more*water though.

Now after roughly 7 days with the eye drops, she still doesn't eat anything. Even her fresh food intake went down to "not starving" but we can start to feel her spine. It's till "round" so it seems to be in the decent area. We though it might be the eye drops giving her a loss of appetite but it all started the day they arrived here, as mentioned before and she "clamps" her right eye, while the other one is fully open. She also can't seem to hold her urine in anymore, she runs into a corner and not the designated litter boxes and it's a lot of urine.

And lastly, she is now hiding from us in the kitchen under the table and "shoves" her face into the table leg, which never used to do, she was basically a dog.

We tried everything at this point, we switched food 3 times, she doesn't like any, we try with fresh foods like lettuce, cucumber and carrot, which she only likes occasionally and she doesnt really eat hay, never really used to, even in the old place.

We will call the vet again tomorrow, as it's shut for the day but I was just wondering, if anyone could help in advance. I read, that it might be a*gi stasis*but she is still pooping from time to time. And would the Statis not have "hit" weeks ago?

We are really desperate, any help would be great*:)

Thanks

Hello. From what you described it looks like teeth problems to me. Did the vet check her teeth? Not just front, but also ones in the back of her mouth.
She might have molar spurs or tooth root problems. My rabbit also has a same problem and he was behaving quite like your bunny does right now.

It could quite possibly be a problem with teeth, although urinating as she does might indicate a uti. Also respiratory issues can’t be discounted. Are you using an exotics rabbit savvy vet? I would get her seen by one ASAP. Is she still on painkillers. And gut meds would be a good idea to get her digestive system moving. Is she moulting? Sometimes a big moult can cause a gut slowdown. Is she eating hay? I would try different hays to try to get her eating more. Haybox, Timothy hay.co.uk are favourites here. Sending lots of vibes for your bunny.

To me it sounds as though Dental problems may be involved, including Tooth Root elongation. This can lead to the tooth roots overgrowing and pressing on the nasolacrimal ducts/penetrating the nostrils. This then leads to gunky eyes and sneezing/nasal discharge.

Tooth Root Elongation can only be diagnosed from skull Radiographs

Any change in litter tray use habits needs to be investigated. It can happen when a Rabbit is under stress (eg change of environment ) or it can be indicative of a physical illness such as a Urinary Tract Infection or Encephalitozoon Cuniculi (EC)

If you are still in Edinburgh I'd advise you to try to get your Rabbit seen by the Specialist Vets here :

Good luck x
