Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Entropian

Hi all!

We had our new rescue lop Gandalf neutered on Monday, and he had a little white discharge in his left eye so the vet looked at his teeth while he was under anaesthetic to check it wasn’t dental. Teeth were fine but he mentioned that he thinks he has entropian and that the discharge is being caused by the eyelashes curling in.

He’s recovering super well from the neutering and is already as happy and hungry as before, but the vet said he will need surgery on the eyelid to fix it. He said it didn’t appear urgent and said he would want an eye specialist to do it which would take a bit of time to get an appointment for.

Has anyone got any experience of entropian in rabbits? It doesn’t seem to have been particularly bothering him but obviously I want it to be repaired if it can be especially if he’s in pain (the vet said it was most likely ‘mildly uncomfort’ but i know it’s so hard to tell with buns.)

He’s now been to the vet 4 times in the 6 weeks we’ve had him (he was not a healthy boy when we got him poor thing) so would love some advice on how to proceed - I don’t know if it’s best to give him some time to settle and heal from the surgery and then get the eye looked at in a few months or just get it all over and done with ASAP?

All advice and help welcome!

I would give him some time to fully get over his neuter if it were me, possibly about a month? Echinacea is believed to be good for boosting a rabbit's immune system, it might help him to undergo another GA well.

Sorry to hear of Gandalfs eye problems. My approach would be to go ahead with the referral to the eye specialist & attend a consult if needed. They will be in the best place to judge the best time to intervene / operate. Even if this isn't for some time it'd be nice to have everything in place so that if eyes become more of a problem you can access specialist treatment quicker (hopefully). Sometimes it is necessarry to have 2 G.A.'s in quick succession even though its not ideal. One of my bunnies had 2 GA's on consecutive days. She was fine.

I've no experience of this personally though. Well wishes for Gandalf

Is Gandalf a French Lop ? This breed is prone to Entropian

If Gandolf definitely does have the condition then the sooner it is surgically treated the better to prevent more serious corneal damage occurring I expect your Vet will advise you as to how long to wait after his GA for castration to have another GA.

I agree with this. I’ve not had a rabbit with this condition, but I had a dog who had it, and my vet operated on it as soon as was possible to avoid damage, as Jane mentioned.
