  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Balance issues

Weird eye movements are often symptomatic of a stroke, so maybe your bunny does not have an infection but has had a mini stroke

I think with bunnies they often get nystagmus from both EC & ear infections. Both can be difficult to diagnose. I remember being told horizontal nystagmus was indicative of one cause (my EC bunny had this for a day after her first attack & before the headtilt) & vertical another. It is difficult working out causes which is why most vets cover 2 bases at least.

I hope Sam is continuing to cope well:love:

Hello everyone. Sam is doing well. He has no problems with his balance anymore. No nystagmus or anything else neurological.
Vet checked him first for a stroke, but it was ruled out, because he had normal reaction to his suroundings and his pupils were also reacting to the light as they should.
I'm still not sure what has caused him this episode. But he's being treated for both EC and middle ear infection. So hopefuly it doesn't return.

well done Sam  he's done really well hasn't he? You must be very proud

I'm happy I've managed to catch his episode early enough to get him to a vet for proper treatment, because it was a quick onset. He was fine one moment and then started acting weird. He was hiding, so I've decided to check him out. He was just a little bit unstable on his legs.
I rushed him to a vet clinic in 15 minutes. And he was being examined within 5 minutes of our arrival. By that time he was a lot more unstable and developed a slight head tilt and nystagmus.
I'm really happy with his fast recovery. Hopefuly he's going to do well.
