  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ear abscess

No I haven't had experience of that in a bun. I know others on here have, so I'm sure someone will be along that can share their experience.

Has any body any experience with abscesses in the ear

Yes, a few times. What diagnostics has your Vet carried out thus far and what treatment options have been suggested/given ?

I took him to the vets last night as of the current situation I wasn’t allowed in with him but he was gone a good 20 mins so I don’t know exactly what was done but guessing she looked in his ears. They mentioned ct scan. She has put him on baytrill and metacam we have to go back Sunday

Sending lots of vibes for your bunny. I don’t have any experience of this so I can’t advise.

I'd have a read through the links I previously posted :)

I’ve had a quick look will read properly when I’m home later. He has the eye rolling and the only way I can describe him acting is disorientated/confused

I don’t 100% but I’m treating with panacur we are on day 12, my other rabbit had that’s and Leroy is completely different

Glad that he is on Panacur to cover for EC just incase :) Are you treating all in contact Rabbits with Panacur too ? I expect you know the importance of bleach cleaning the environment on days 21 and 28 of treatment (using a 10% bleach solution) Alternatively steam cleaning will kill EC spores if certain surfaces cannot be bleach cleaned.

I only have leroy now, My poor Tom didn’t make it he was a rescue only had him in August aswel as ec I think he had something else going on. I did everything I could for him still heartbroken x

He had a check up yesterday and she said he had improved slightly from the time b4 but he stayed in for x rays. its confirmed there are changes with the bone at the base of the ear and fluid he is still on antibiotics and she is sending x rays and notes off to a rabbit specialist at the rabbit welfare association

A CT scan may be suggested to give a better picture of the precise problem and the extent of damage already done. Treatment options will very much depend on this x
