Once it was cleaned yes. Our garden is covered in pigeon poo, I don't worry about it. None of our rabbits or other animals have got sick. We have found several dead black birds in the garden and buried them. I haven't cleaned the grass. The outdoor bunnies would use the garden. Sadly we know the birds were attacked by a cat or other birds.

Is VHD a concern AT ALL here?
What would you use to clean the area?

No concern. I would use hot water and Dettol if you are that worried. Buy a fireplace grill so Cookie can't go in the fireplace.

Just occured to me if it's a fireplace to have a small fire in there, that would kill every germ.

Maybe I could get a new fire guard, are they all the same size?

Think they are standard. Try ebay, should be cheaper there.
