Wise Old Thumper
Over a week ago I noticed my mini-rex, Heidi, was pushing around the litter in her litterbox and it was being scattered. I was not sure if it was because it was from a new bag which may have smelled different or if there was a different reason, like straining to poo/pee. She was also not a fan of the new bag of timothy hay which had thicker/crunchier stems than the last bag. Her poo was not as plentiful, though they were otherwise normal. She was still eating her pellets/fibafirst stick and drinking well. I gave her medicam for a few days and she was making more poo.
Yesterday she ate and drank normally. After I clean her litterbox each night, she normally jumps right in the litterbox to make poos. Though when I cleaned her late last night she went in the litterbox and pushed around the litter but she did not make poos. She also did not want a piece of fibafirst stick which I offered. She did eat her ration of evening pellets, yet it was unusual for her to not be begging for more.
I waited an hour for her to make poo and there were 6 normal sized poos and an equal number of soft/small poo/cecal. The normal sized poos were firmer than usual, possibly because she is being fussy with the new hay. She got some Medicam, sub Q fluids, and a dose of motility drug.
In February she got over an incident of gut slowdown though the cause was never determined. I hope she will improve this time, though I know even then she will likely require a vet visit (I do not even know if my vet is working).
Please send Heidi some vibes. She is such a good girl.
