Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Orange urine

wench

Young Bun
Hello, I recently moved my 2 bunnies into a large shed with outdoor run. They are both quite well litter trained, however, in the last week every morning I have come out to check on them and found a large amount of creamy orange urine on the floor far away from their litter tray. I'm not sure whether it's Bert or Harley doing it but just a bit concerned as it's not like them to not use their litter tray and also it appears to be quite a large amount. Also I'm concerned about the colour. Both rabbits appear happy and healthy otherwise and I have not changed their diet. Does anyone have any ideas?? They are adopted but I was told by the rescue they have both been neutered.

It could be a few reasons or just normal. If it looks sludgy they may be eating foods high in Calcium so I would consider this. Not a lot of Kale, Parsley etc. What does their diet consist of?

As they have just moved to a new environment some loss of litter tray training may occur for a while. So providing more litter trays could be useful.

With regards to the colour of the wee, Rabbit urine can vary in colour a lot and dark orange wee is usually due to the excretion of dietary plant pigments

'Creamy' wee can indicate that the Rabbit is having too much calcium in their diet. Rabbits have a complicated calcium metabolism, but these links may be useful to take a look at

My two live in a playhouse and wee on two sides: I think one side is visited by other wildlife and they like to make sure it's theirs, the other side has a hayrack. Sometimes, especially Spring, the non-hayrack side will see more activity, presumably because there's different smells coming from outside again. Sometimes I can take this tray away entirely, sometimes they'll use it all year round.
