  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vibes for Fizzgig please

Fizzgig has developed a respiratory infection. She's been on Enrocare for a week and we took her back to the vet today because she was getting worse. We've now got her on doxycycline in addition and she is now being nebulised every few hours. But I can see her getting worse. She is gasping and struggling to eat, and despite stealing an oaticakes out of a tub an hour or so ago, she has started to hide herself away. Until today she was still eating well but the signs are very worrying now. I don't know what more we can do for her? :(

Sending lots of vibes for her. I don’t have any experience of this so I can’t advise xx

Oh poor Fizzgig  Did the Vet mention giving a diuretic. If she has fluid on her lungs then a diuretic would help clear it. This could significantly help her breathing.

Bronchodilators can also help open up the airways

A mucolytic such as Bisolvon can thin out mucus secretions and make it easier for them to drain out

I am assuming Fizzgig is spayed ?

Hi Jane,

Yes she's spayed, she's a dental bun and she's been getting a pinch of bisolvan since last Friday along with the enrocare. The vet didn't mention a diuretic though.

Loads of vibes for Fizzgig, really hoping she turns a corner soon. Dandelions are a natural diuretic x

Thank you, I spoke with the emergency vet and she advised against taking her in tonight, said to syringe feed if needed and keep up with the nebuliser. If no improvement then we can take her back tomorrow. She's still keen to eat but it's clearly a huge effort right now. X

I hope that Fizzgig has made it through the night. If so personally I'd want her to be admitted and put onto Oxygen as well as her other treatment. I do hope that she can recover xx

Thank you Jane, she has made it through the night, I have been nebulising her every 2-3 hours. I am hoping to take her in as soon as they open at 10.

Lots of vibes being sent. Personally I would not try any more syringe feeds as in her current state she is at high risk of aspirating them. I really hope that the Vet can help her xx

Sending loads of vibes for your girl, sorry only just seen your thread, hope she gets on ok at vets xx
