  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Little Bonnie has gone to the Bridge

So sorry about Little Bonnie. You did the best you could.

I know how you feel about unsavvy rabbit vets - it's frustrating when the vet you're seeing clearly has no idea about rabbits.

The final vet I saw was almost patronising - but that could have been a language thing. I had to try to guess what word he was saying - like some sort of sick charade. I did ask him to contact the owner who I had seen before, which he did and intensive nursing was recommended. I am going to change my vet but have been to all of the local ones. I get to find a bunny savvy vet and then they leave for one reason or another and I am back to square one!!

Thank you for your support everyone and for not judging me for failing Bonnie. I should have been more assertive but every suggestion I made was met with a reason why it wasn't do-able:(

You did your best which is all any of us can do. For future reference this article about Gut Stasis is written by the RWAF Veterinary Specialist Advisor.

If you are unfortunate enough to have another Bunny with Gut Stasis and any Vet you see will not even consider the treatment protocols described in the article exit the surgery pdq and go to another Vet. I'd do some research about Rabbit Savvy Vets near you now rather than waiting til one may be needed.

If I remember correctly I think you may have seen John Chitty at times ? So I'd stick with him if at all possible ?? If not then this link may give you some other options

Finally, more for any non RU members who may be reading this thread, re this

She had had sub cut fluids and an anti emetic as she was regurgitating the Critical care

Rabbits cannot vomit so it is pretty obvious that poor Bonnie had some sort of obstruction. The drug used as part of the treatment is Metoclopramide (refer back to this link http://anyflip.com/dvpt/hzvv ) which is actually an antiemetic and it works by increasing the rate of gastric emptying. It's use is contraindicated if the Rabbit has a GI tract obstruction. If given it can prove to be fatal

I did say that to the vet and he said that Bonnie wasn't vomiting but bringing back some of the critical care. It wasn't metaclop she was given as I did ask and didn't recognise the name he told me. He was the vet whose English wasn't good so I can't be sure what he meant. I did like John Chitty but he is a long way from where I live sadly. I was referred to him when one of my bunnies broke her leg but both bun and I struggled with the journey.

Bonnie deserved so much better:( I am going to try the vet Nap recommended as Hayling Island is not far from me at all.

I used the same vet surgery with Mr Salted Caramel and the vet I saw for most of his treatment was awesome. There are just too many vets working there though - you can't choose who you see most of the time. I will not be using them again for my bunnies.

I’m so sorry for your loss. You did everything possible to help Bonnie. Her time with you may have been short but she finally experienced true love and care at last. Sending hugs x
