Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Head tilt - linked to fluid (Frusol) - diuretic resistance?

bunny babe

Wise Old Thumper
Hi, a long time since I have been on here but Rambo has been treated for almost a year on Frusol due to heart failure/kidney failure (and Fortekor) and has had a good quality of life.

The last couple of days has had head tilt again (like he did a year ago). We are convinced that it is fluid again as looks similar to a year ago and have been doing a bit of research and wondering if it could be "diuretic resistance". We came across this - https://www.healio.com/cardiology/h...overcome-diuretic-resistance-in-congestive-hf

Wondering if anyone else had come across this and what the options were as I can't see anything specific to bunnies.

We are waiting for the vet to call us back (they came out last night).

Sorry, only just saw your FB message. To be honest IME the symptoms Rambo is exhibiting now have only ever been due to a middle ear infection. Even two Bunnies who were also on Furosemide due to having CHF. I cant remember what other meds Rambo is on ?? As the bulging eye is unilateral it is highly unlikely to be due to a Thymoma, this usually causes bilateral Exophthalmos (bulging eyes).

The blood test Rambo is due to have should provide the Vet with some information/evidence of whether or not diuretic resistance is an issue as Sodium levels and renal function will be checked. This article contains information about the management of diuretic resistance in humans and I think a similar scenario would apply for Rabbits

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5933583/

But as I said, my money would be on the head tilt/bulging eye being a symptom of middle ear disease xx
