Clementine is nesting again :(

No point to this really, but it breaks my heart, it's so hard to watch her go through it all, she's so determined, I'm at home today incase I had to go back to the hospital but she's just running around moving hay everywhere and she's making a huge nest. Obviously I couldn't have known that she'd still get this after spaying.. And I don't think breeding is right, and with her knees it would've been irresponsible to breed from her, but I think if I'd known it would've never gone away, I'd have let her have a litter and just kept them all, because she's obviously just meant to be a mum. Breaks my heart watching her wear herself out like this :(

I hope it doesn't go on too long this time too

Poor Clementine  I hope she doesn’t carry on too long. Can the vet help at all?

That must be a heartbreaking sight - poor girlie. I hope she is feeling hormonally back to normal soon. I've never seen nesting - the closest was Joey carrying a bundle of hay in his mouth upstairs

You know, I don't know! They know it happens several times a year, but they never mentioned there was anything we can do about it.. But then I never specifically asked either... I think I'll ask, she's due an xray, so I'll ask then, thanks Zoobec :)

One time she got so into nest making and stressed, she didn't eat or drink and went into stasis :(

Yea it really is :( it's basically that, constantly running around with a huge bundle of hay, moving it all to one area and creating a nest, then sometimes also plucking her fur out and adding it to the nest. But it's not like an hour job, it seems to take all day, she just doesn't stop, the nest just gets altered and larger the longer she works on it.. I've called her over for treats but she just runs over excited but her mouth is stuffed full of hay and she won't drop it, so can't take the treat :( I noticed it last night, and it's still going on now, I hope she got some sleep last night :( I feel terrible for her. She really thinks there's kits coming :(

Tui has done this a couple of times after she's been spayed. I'm not sure that if you had let her have one litter before spaying, that it would have reduced the likelihood of nesting. I'm also not sure that nesting by itself is an upsetting behaviour, whether it results in the production of a litter or not. It will be something that she will feel compelled to do because of her hormones, but I'm not sure she will associate it with having kits. If additionally she starts pulling fur out of herself or Atticus then that is different, as it will produce physical issues.

we often say on here "I wish we could read their minds" but I'm not sure I could bare that either :( I guess you worry about all the sudden extra activity on her knees too

Yea I'm probably projecting human emotions onto her, it's just hard to watch.

Also yea even if she'd had a litter it may not have changed anything for her.

I think I'll talk to my vet, she does seem stressed when it happens, like on a mission and the plucking isn't great :(

Yea could be good or worse really, couldn't it!

Yea, I really do, because she just doesn't stop ever, which is polar opposite to her normally, she's quite lazy, with the odd spring around, whereas this is constant charging up and down.. The first time she nested at 14 weeks was when her knees gave out.. I know it would've happened at some point because the grooves on her knee caps weren't formed right, but all the constant charging around is when they slipped out of place :(

If it is happening a lot and she is obviouusly stressed by iy it then IMO it is not 'normal'. It could be that some ovarian tissue was left behind when she was spayed. Then there is also the possibility of adrenal hyperplasia, although that is far more likely to occur in older neutered Bucks

Your Vet should be able to access the full article on this link

There is a hormone implant (Suprelorin) that can be used in cases of adrenal gland hyperplasia

Hi Gracie,
I am glad you did not have to go to the hospital.
Many years ago my bridge bunny nested several times each year. She would pull fur too. I wish we had the information JJ shared then.
Sending you and Clementine some vibes.
