Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Regular prescription for painkillers - what do people do?

My rabbit went to a specialist with his ear and whilst under they did a CT scan found arthritis. So he's now on Loxicom twice a day to assist. I'm running out of meds and stupidly forgot to get some more when he was back at the vets, so have been phoning up and it turns out my vet has to prescribe but didn't have the details so going to have to wait for get sent over now before I can get any. My question is those who are getting lifelong meds, do you buy it online with a prescription etc (I believe painkillers need a prescription so I can't just buy it) or just get it at your vets? I'm guessing it will be cheaper to buy online, but not sure what my vets are going to charge me yet. Thanks
 
It depends on the vets policy, were I work the policy is pets must be seen for a medication review every 3 months. So the loxicom could be dispensed for 3 months but then a vet check up is needed. It's the same to get a written prescription for the loxicom to buy it online, and the charge for the written prescription is quite high. My dog sees a referral/specialist vet and for his longterm prescription he has to be seen every 6 months, but I do get a written prescription for him as it is much cheaper now his insurance no longer covers it. I would ask your vets what their policy is on repeat medications/written prescriptions. Good luck with your bunny :)
 
I get mine direct from my vets (I have 2 of my four bunnies on loxicom for life) but it probably would be loads cheaper if your vet would write a prescription (I expect they'd add fees for doing this). From a vets perspective I guess their concern is us continuing to medicate without getting their ailments reviewed. From memory I think a 10 ml bottle of dog loxicom is about £12 from my vet, 30mls about £27.

How much is he taking?

Thanks, he's on 1.5mg/ml Loxicom, 0.6ml twice per day. The bottle the vet gave me was 32ml for after he had finished metacam we used up first.

So the 32ml will last him just short of a month.

Will you let us know what happens please.

Yes, so I'm definitely going to need it on a regular basis. Fudge doesn't seem too bothered about heat, but I will look into getting him a snuggle safe so he has the choice. I have one of his seagrass houses by the radiator but mostly he chooses the one by the external wall to sleep in. In the evening he spends his time in the middle of the room and I have bought the foam flooring mats to put down, or I finally found a bed he won't eat and chills on that.
