    Default Fixing the Hutch

With Chibbs settling in and so no bunnies in what we call Area 3, the tiny hutch Lopsy came with, it was time to fix the tray. I love this hutch: it's a fantastic little area for them with different levels to explore and a cosy area to sit in but absolutely miniscule. I love it so much that when one came up on Freecycle (used as a guinea pig retreat in a shed) I snapped it up. That tray was in much worse condition than ours so that was the one I attempted today. The tray has a metal base which corrodes away. The 'new' tray only has two supports, ours has three.

Here's the offending article with the new bit of plywood I got to go in it:

First, let's remove the old tray base: I used a scraper which I gently hammered between the supports and tray. It was glued on.

I also used the scraper to break the edges off.

    Ta da!

Now, I'd like to have put some beading on the outside to hold the ends up (so 2 x 2.5kg of bunny doesn't fall through)but I couldn't easily access any today (garage is a bit rammed XD) so I improvised with nails. It'll do for now ;P

I also nailed the top down but didn't have any short nails so had to hacksaw the ends off. I'll be filing the ends down later. I made sure the nails came out the bottom of course, not near any bunny feet!

Ta da! And in-situ (it does fit all the way in!).

I'm really pleased, I just hope it works! We'll find out tomorrow when we open up the tube to Areas 3 and 4a!
