  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

'nyom nyom' noises - trivial ?

hi - my 5 year old bunny has started making 'chirping type' noises every time he eats pellets - he has made these noises occasionally before (when eating) and i've associated it with happiness when he gets food but they've become a lot more pronounced just this week. He doesn't make them when he eats hay and he is eating everything enthusiastically and is on top form behaviourally ... so do i just put this down to good mood/age-related increase in vocalness?

He and his sidekick are indoors for winter .. but have been so for a few weeks so no big changes in environment or diet in past two weeks. He was at vet for RHDV2 vaccination in december and his teeth, weight, and general checkover were all good.

It's really cute - as long as it's benign. He's a stasis bunny (diet controlled with no attacks for over 2 years) so i watch for any changes like a hawk ...

Are the noises 'nasal' ?

HI Jack's Jane - i'd say they're more throat/mouth based - he's not snuffly and not sneezy ... nothing about his general behaviour is giving me cause for concern; if anything, considering they're indoors for winter (he's an outdoor soul), he seems really happy and animated just now.

It is hard to judge what it could be without being able to hear it myself. Sometimes Rabbits can be effected by central heating in that it dries out the atmosphere. But if the noise only occurs when he is eating that is unlikely to be the case. If it'd put your mind at rest a Vet check may be a good idea. He/she could listen to his chest and check his teeth etc.

Good luck, please update us if you get time xx

Hi Jack's Jane - he was seen by vet today and verdict is all good respiratory/dental-wise so probably just increased vocalisation .. a good outcome. Was a pronounced change so am glad i had him checked. Thanks for your input :)
