Homemade Forage (or Hay cookies)

joey&boo

Wise Old Thumper
I want to make my own forage bricks. I reckon this will be really good for
1) storage
2)mess
3) better balance of different forages
4) easier to ration out use

Has anyone ever tried this? My main concern would be getting them bone dry right through & how to check for moisture

Wondered if something like this might work as a press

I have no idea how to make your own! I buy the huge ones, ready “bricked”!

I was musing on this just now whilst being out with the chickens :)

As I said, the key thing is to get the moisture dried out quickly and before the mixture rots. For that to have any chance of success, I think you would need to cut the grass/forage in small pieces. I was thinking also that a smaller block, than the log-maker, would be better, firstly for drying out purposes and secondly because if it didn't work then you've only wasted a small amount.

So I then thought that maybe use a process something like that used for making soil blocks for seeds. There are several websites showing how to do this, such as https://www.theprairiehomestead.com/2014/04/diy-soil-block-maker.html I noticed also that some of them said to use Glycerin to bind them together, which suggests that they could be difficult to hold together.

Wow, thanks Omi. Those homemade ones seem like a good way to test it out & yes, smaller would be better.
