Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sneezy bunny

Mama Doe
Bertie is around 5 years old (maybe a little older, he was a rescue).
He sneezes a lot. I have noticed it on and off since I have owned him but recently we moved the hutch right next to the house and I have been noticing it more. Earlier in the year I took him to the vets for his vaccinations and he had a wet patch under his nose so the vet said she wouldnt vaccinate until this was treated and I was given treatment - metacam and antibiotics. He took this for around 5 weeks with no real improvement. The vet in the end said she would vaccinate him as apart from his runny nose he was perfectly healthy otherwise.
Anyway, he was sneezing a lot this morning. I wondered if he could be allergic to anything? I do use dust extracted hay but there are some tiny bits of hay in it. Also he has very fine fur and although he is a short haired rabbit, it is quite thick and fluffy, it even makes me sneeze. He moults a lot!

Does anyone have any advice?

He lives with another rabbit and she has no symptoms at all.

Thanks

I'll be interested to read the answers you get to this, because I also have a sneezy bunny! He has been like this since we got him from a rescue last month. In that time he has been seen by the vet twice (for vaccinations), who has been at a loss as to what's happening because in every other way he is a picture of health. He of course didn't sneeze for the vet though! His ears, teeth, temperature etc were all fine.

Allergies are a possibility, but tooth root problems can also cause sneezing. Is Bertie a Dental Rabbit ?

Did the Vet suggest further diagnostics such as a deep nasal swab, endoscopic examination of the nasal passages and skull radiographs ?

Thanks for the reply jane.
No he isn’t a dental bunny, his teeth are fine.
The vet looked in his nose and said it was inflamed. After the treatment it wasn’t inflamed but he was still sneezing. Vet didn’t suggest anything else, but I didn’t push it as I do suspect it’s some sort of allergy and wanted to see if it improved following completion of treatment.

He has had EC before which caused a ruptured retina so he is blind in one eye. He doesn’t have weepy eyes though and apart from the sneezing seems healthy otherwise

Well without skull Radiographs it is impossible to say for certain that tooth root problems are not causing the sneezing.

Some Rabbits can become very sneezy during a moult. Do you help him out by grooming him daily ? How is he doing now ?
