Syringe feeding tips?

Just tried putting 0.2 from metacam syringe in normal syringe - hard to say exactly but it looks like Denny MAY be on 2ml twice a day. I'm in no position to say whether that a lot or not but I'm sure you can trust Uncle John to give him the right dose for his needs. You're not gonna be able to hide that much in treats though.

Wow yea Atticus was on 2ml twice a day, but that was only allowed for a few days [emoji51]

What you said about that one is just the one for getting it out the bottle is how it is normally if I get Metacam, normally I get loxicom instead so don't have to faff with two syringes [emoji38]

If he is on 2ml per day.. That's a lot to hide and I reckon you'll only be able to syringe it [emoji51]

How much does Dennis weigh?

This is what he was prescribed along side sulfitrim 0.7ml twice daily. He's not going to be on that dose forever only until he has his tear ducts flushed

Dennis weighs 2.7. He told me that buns handle metacam better than dogs or cats

Oh yea I thinks that's definitely true, I think I read somewhere that they metabolise it quicker?

Poor Denny :( that amount would be tough to hide x

As I am simple this means I can't understand Dennys

I heard many times that bunnies tolerate Metacam well

I got one of those recovery syringes with the long skinny nozzle. I put both medications in there will some apple puree. It's the only thing I can do really. :( I wish he would take it from the syringe himself

Yea Atticus doesn't just take the syringe, but tbh I just pick him up, put him down hold is front paws and his head gets smooshed against me and he has no choice [emoji51][emoji38] he does prefer smaller syringes though over the 2.5ml ones so I tend to do more of the skinny 1ml syringes and just do a little break between them for him to swallow and give me evils [emoji38]

What are you concerned about Booblys mum?

Sent from my GT-I9195 using Tapatalk

I'm not concerned. I just got used to my dosing instructions coming as they do above & not like your vets does. The only worry is my lack of mental function

Yea mine come like that too, I assume what it is, is John knows what the dose is for 20kg on the syringe like maybe it is 2ml? Idk but for ease and so Loobers can use the syringe it comes with just says give to the 20kg mark..

See your doses for your two seem very low [emoji38] Idk what it's for though or how much they weigh etc. I'd love to ask all the vets like to explain it all, I find it fascinating :D

Like maybe for issue A - a very low dose is needed to keep the bun comfy. Whereas issue B you need a very strong dose as long as liver function is fine (just making this up, but I assume it's like this? [emoji38])

That's just what you are provided with - only one kg syringe. Toby was on 15kg for life, Maple was on 10kg after her spay

I think Phillips on Metacam, what are you on lad?

My bunnies are on low doses. Mousey weighs 2.8 k & Rudey around 2.3 k (His dose is smaller relative to body weight cos of kidneys)

I remember FHB saying (maybe at one of her lectures) that just cos rabbits can tolerate high doses well it does not necessarily mean they need that much. So I'm assuming if Mouse or Rudey appeared to be struggling it could go up after a review

in fact they both have had an increase. Mouse from 0.25 & Rudeys sorrowful 0.15

You should do a metacam poll

I am always given the kg marked syringe with Metacam. Yan was up to the 17kg mark in 2013 (!) and he weighed around 3kgs.

I find it's best to take them out of their normal 'safe' environment where they tend to struggle less as they don't feel as confident there.

They don't prescribe it like this anymore but Noodley was on a whole 4 drops.

its mad how much doses vary

I'm no expert but my first thought was that the short term high dosage of metacam for Dennis was more for its anti-inflammatory properties to get the tear ducts in a state they can be flushed.

Metacam's a funny one because I think people get concerned about high dosages because of the association with kidney damage. When I spoke with the specialist a couple of months ago about it, my understanding was that it's more of an issue in cats than rabbits. But don't quote me on that because I might have understood it wrong!

Anyway, I feel your pain with the meds Loobers. None of my bunnies have ever taken the syringe willingly. They've all had to be chased, manhandled and sat on. I have to say that I agree with others that taking them into another room somehow seems to work in that they become slightly more cooperative with it. I've also found it helps having a strict routine, so you do it at exactly the same time(s) each day. They do seem to pick up the routine quite quickly and know that you'll leave them alone the rest of the time.

Sorry, couldn't resist quoting you on this one  This is FHB's belief - its well tolerated even in bunnies with kidney probs. Rudeys new vet (Ruth) had this conversation with me the other week. His first vet though was very reluctant to prescribe him any though thinking it was a risk to his kidneys. I need to double check this as I was thinking why bother test Mousey's kidney function if she'd stay on it anyway but maybe its just for a dose adjustment like Rudey had

Mods: please invite FHB, John Chitty, Molly Varga, Simon from the Cat & Rabbit Clinic, Vet from the Royal D!ck & the posh place in london Scrappy goes - tell them to join, we want, nay need, a good Q&A session

That's right scraps, it's only to get the inflammation down then It will drop down for his athritis again.

"Drops" made me laugh. 20 drops for Dennis tonight. He does have a routine, he very much has a whole schedule every day before the meds came along!
